Haldex Gen 4 Oil + Filter change

Featured Replies

I changed oil and Filter on our Superb II 4x4 from 2014. The dealers are happy to change the Haldex oil or sell it to me, but they deny that there is a filter.

I bought my kit online for £64.

I had changed oil and filter on a Haldex 3 V70 AWD, which is an exercise you only want to do once in your life.

After reading across the internet to get some useful tips I started with the car on axle stands. I watched a slightly deceiving haldex service on youtube on a Tiguan. You do not have half as much room under a Superb!! So be prepared for a tight job and at some point I wished I had my wife's small hands - but it is doable.

There is a concensus among Haldex oil suppliers and across internetforums that ALL Haldex oil is exactly the same for ALL car manufacturers for Haldex 2, 3, 4 and 5. So it does not matter whether you buy Volvo, Ford or VAG Haldex AOC oil.

You need a 4mm, 5mm and an 8mm Allen key. The refill / inspection bolt and the drain bolt are more on the left and the filter is on the right side of the Haldex. I used a 60ml syringe and a piece of tubing to refill.

I started by testing if I could easily loosen the respective bolts - 4 of them. I then removed the cap from the filter and activated the Haldex pump via VCDS / VCP. When activated it pushes the filter element and sealing spacer out a fraction together with some oil. As I did not have pliers with long AND 90° angled prongs I used 2 screw drivers on either side and worked the white sealing spacer out. Unfortunately the black filter element did not follow although I could wiggle it inside the clutch. I took the black rubber rings off the spacer, put a screw into the center to handle it and then "fished" for the filter inside. You can feel it engage and then slowly pull it out.

I then opened the drain plug and drained about 450 ml of slightly discoloured - compared to new - oil.

The refill was a pain as you cannot pump the new oil in quick. It will just flood back out at you straitht away, so the refill took a while and it is messy.

As you can see from the pictures the filter has some "bits" on it and may not be a filter for life. I did not bother to cut the filter in half, but if you are interested some people have posted theirs cut up on some forums.

Is it possible to replace the filter whitout engaging the pump?

What I mean, If I don´t have access to VCDS / VCP, Can I replace the filter whitout it?
