2018 VRS Sound Generator

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, first post here.

I have a new 2018 Octavia VRS TDi DSG which I bought in April, I have a question about the “sound generator”

I drive it usually in Individual mode as I like the sportier engine settings but not the heavier steering, I also have the sound generator option set to “Sport” in the Individual mode setting, but since the start of owning it I don’t think I can hear any difference in the engine sound/loudness when I flick from Eco > Normal > Sport. Now, I’m 32 so hopefully not losing my hearing just yet! But should I know that this is actually happening, ie, is it easily noticeable to hear the difference when it’s on?!

I’ve tried all modes, sport setting on the gearbox, paddle shift, everything and I’m convinced there is absolutely no difference in sound!

Can anyone with the same car help me out a bit?

Many thanks!

Johnny

Cracking colour! There should be a noticeable difference between eco and sport in terms of the noise from the sound generator. Could have been unplugged or turned down with VCDS but seems unlikely on a new one if you are first owner.

Ditto. I got car delivered in May and cannot hear any diffrence between settings or indeed any electronically generated sound at all..... I'm 50 but hearing is better than wife and daughter!:D

Hi mine is a Sept 2017 FL VRS 245 and it was much louder in sport mode than comfort, although now turned off completely via VCDS.  Maybe the diesels are different?

Might have to just drop it round to the dealer sometime and see what they reckon.

Just have nothing to compare it to to see if it is indeed working, can’t see any youtube vids on the topic either

As above, my generator much louder in sport mode.

Back to the stealer seems to be the right shout! Will help you drown out the dieselly rattle!  ;-)

Mine too, but it wasn't my cuppa tea, so had it turned down to 30%.  Bliss

Gaz

I also have a 2018 Octavia VRS TDi DSG and drive it in individual mode. You can definitely hear the noise, especially if you are generous with your right foot. Drive it normally and the noise is not so prominent.

I’ve been driving myself mad trying it in different modes, flooring it at the same speed, same gear, slow, fast, trying to find a difference. My neighbours must think I’m terrible at driving...

I’ll drop it round to the dealer next week if I get a chance. And if that fails I’ll post some pics of my lovely new beige hearing aids

I had a 2014 TDi manual and drove that in Sport Mode in all the time I had it, whats the point in buying a "semi warm" car and driving it in eco mode?

I miss the sound generator in my current car, as liked the sound. But I think the idea of a sound generator is good, just a shame you cannot have some interesting sounds as options - like a V8 or something amusing. Would make driving a bit more fun.

Lovely car!

Same here - one month old TSI 245 and no difference across modes...

Noise is there only when you accelerate hard. If you drive normally, there is very little difference. Try for example in 2nd gear, from 1500rpm full throttle and check difference between Comfort and Sport, there should be.

I have a pre FL 230, and the noise is very much louder in Sport then in other modes.

If I switch mine from Eco to Sport at idle, you get a definite lowering of engine tone and burble. Don't need to be revving to hear the actuator...

@mumphie, thanks, I will try this. Haven't noticed any difference on idle. More difference makes if AC compressor switches on and off (when all electric consumers are off, actually my TSI is supersilent on idle, but 99% it is in Comfort).

Being honest, I can't say I have ever noticed the difference in the 'noise'  I can hear from said generator. I'm only 26, so I hope my hearing hasn't gone just yet.

Do you know whereabouts in the VCDS the sound generator adjustment part is? I found the below picture on here, but I don't know how the user got there.

Nice one. Sorry, I couldn't see the wood for the trees.

I'll have a butcher's on my car tomorrow and see what setting mine is at.

I've had a look on vcds at this setting and mine is on 100%. I've done the output test for it as well and I clearly hear it is, plus I done with the engine on as well and it was just as loud.

However, just giving the car a rev up the drive, I couldn't say I could hear a difference between the driving modes.

To be fair, I can't say I've ever been able to hear a difference when I've driven the car in 'VRS' mode'. You can definitely hear the engine, but I've never felt I could hear a 'put on' sound.

I wouldn't I have the radio blurring away, but I do have it at a volume which I'm able to appreciate my canton system.

When I'm back on the road, I'll have to play about with it.

I have a 2014 2.0 tdi vrs ... Can you get a factory sound generator for the exhaust system like you can get for the mk7 gtd ? To improve the grunt of the car from outside with out have to straight piping it. Rather a factory product the the ones like auftec but if anyone has a price in them two I wouldn't mind knowing

Hi, If you cant hear a difference then there definitely is a problem. I am cyrrently driving my 2nd VRS which is a MY19, previously it was an MY16. The noise is very noticeable. My current one has a fault and makes a buzzing sound so I turned it off. There are different ways of doing this, if you are the new owner you would have known if it had been disconnected though.

If it would be helpful Im happy to turn mine back on and do you a comparison video to put your mind at rest? It will be a TSI and not a TDI but you will probably get the idea.

Just let me know, Im going out later on today anyway.

The in the cabin in my car is working fine but I was looking for a set for the outside of my car

@Darrendaly123 I hadnt realised you had raked over a 12 month old thread, I was looking to help the original poster!

Nevermind eh!

Good luck with the exhaust

I unplugged it in my 2016 model (easy to do but of course that means it is permanently off unless you plug it in again) as it wasn't possible to alter it in mode settings and, overall it was more annoying tiring than desirable to have it permanently on. It was quieter in eco (probably silent) and normal (on but quieter than sport) but still annoying - and I wanted to leave it in sport.

Now in my 2019 245 I can switch it off in individual mode (individual mode is set to the same as sport without the sound generator) but I can still enjoy it when I want the minor thrill it gives when I go to sport mode.  I can definitely hear a difference.

I know it's fun but the sound generator is basically fake!
