Fabia VRS MK2 - Waterpump/Supercharger Clutch - Part Number

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Recently had the water pump changed on my Fabia VRS MK2 (63 plate with CHTE engine) after it started to sound a bit like a tractor. I think it ended up being a blown bearing.

However, since the change I’ve started hearing a squeak as the supercharger kicks in at lower RPM (~2000). Best heard if you back off and let the revs drop below 2000 and accelerate again.

Having done some searching it appears that this is one of the well known problems with this engine.

I stumbled across Lucifers guide to this engine on the Cupra forum (I think from a link in a post here). The post mentions that a revised version of the water pump/supercharger clutch assembly resolved the noise issue.

Sounds like replacements sometimes bring this issue to light if the older variant is used.

Has anyone experienced this?

Has anyone got a list of part numbers for old and new variants?

The garage who replaced the pump are keen to help but are struggling to find different part numbers.

Many help much appreciated!

Cheers,

James

PS, Here’s a link to Lucifers post for reference - this is going to be my go to guide for quite a few things now.

Cracking post:

Welcome.

Who did the work?

Surely they got the correct parts.  Did you have the belts changed?

These are the parts number as used on Mk2 Fabia CAVE engines 2010-2012, and on your CTHE engine from 2012 on.

You will find plenty owners here or past owners of mk2 Fabia vRS that have owned CAVE & CTHE engine cars that can help you

as they have done servicing, maintenance and modifications & gone through the trials and tribulations.

?

How many miles done,

& has your Timing Chain been checked?  You will find threads on that as well.

?

Has your DSG needed and had done Service Campaign '34H5', a software update?

*Do not let people without knowledge of the 1.4 TSI / TSFI Twincharger engines mess about working on them.*

Hey Offski, thanks for the thorough reply!

Forwarded those part numbers on to the garage. I’m hopeful they have ordered the right parts but after reading Lucifers notes in the thread I’m suspecting that I’ve got a new part that may be an old variant (before the clutch material was modified). Having a quick search it looks like there are a few different part numbers flying around for the waterpump - different trailing letters which I understand indicates minor modifications. Waiting to hear back from the garage on exactly what part they ordered/fitted (and also what brand).

Regarding your extra notes, the car is coming up to 55k (it’s a daily driver), hasn’t had its timing chain checked (I’ll be looking into this now) but has had the 34H5 update for the DSG (Skoda UK were very helpful with this over Twitter of all places - I didn’t have a service sticker in the spare wheel well but they have confirmed the action and that no other notes are outstanding).

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Will keep this updated.

Was it a Skoda Dealership or VW Specialist that changed it?

Were the 2 belts replaced?

What bearing was blown, water pump or on the tensioner?

Who did '34H5' Software update and never put a sticker in the spare tyre well with their Dealership Stamp and date carried out.

Sorry but i really do not trust 'Dealerships' if they do not carry out actions as the TPI / Service Campaign instructions.

I currently have this same issue but have done 2500miles since having the water pump changed and the noise is a lot less than it was and doesnt do it all the time anymore, also had a similar noise when i had a water pump changed on a mk4 golf and again the noise went away after 6months

Hey Scotty, very interesting. Thanks for the input.

I’ve adjusted how I drive whilst I’m waiting on the garage to source a new part and don’t get the noise under ‘usual’ use. It does ‘squeek’ as soon as you dip the throttle in normal mode though - also noticed it happens less in sport mode. Likely because the revs are held higher so the supercharger doesn’t engage as readily.

Out of interest, was the Golf a twincharger too?

Hey all,

Wanted to follow up with some good news - the supercharger clutch squeal issue is resolved!

After some back and forwarding with the garage (and also between them with their suppliers), we settled on returning the initial replacement part and replacing it with an OEM part (plus original belts) that I sourced myself from Skoda.

The car feels and also sounds great again. Massive relief to finally get it sorted.

Leason definitely learnt. Buy genuine.

On a related note, the Skoda dealership were great with regards to ordering the parts in. I ordered them over the phone at three in the afternoon and got a phone call early the next morning informing me they’d arrived. I did also ask about their costs for fitting out of interest and nearly fell off my chair when I got the rough estimate.

Hopefully this will be useful for someone!
