Embarrassingly daft question about Petrol

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am going to be back in the UK next week for the first time in 3 years and the Karoq 1.5 is my first non-diesel engine in over 20 years.

Can someone give me a hint about the name of the petrol I should be using :blush?

Here in Germany we typically have 3 different types of unleaded petrol (Super, Super E10, Super Plus) I am just wondering what name I should be using when I arrive next week.

Thanks

Dave

In the UK we have Unleaded petrol ( 95 Ron ) and Super unleaded ( 97, 98 or 99 Ron ) depending on brand. I would think your Karoq will run on just ordinary unleaded.

Each retailer has different names for the different products.

Basically you'll be needing regular unleaded, 95 RON. Putting something like Shell V Power or Tesco Momentum will be overkill in my opinion as the car isn't mapped for 98+ RON. Saying that some will argue the additives will be beneficial for engine life.

Unleaded 95 ron unless you want to use Super Unleaded.

At ESSO, BP, Sainsbury & others Super Unleaded is 97 ron minimum.

@ Tesco & Shell Super Unleaded is 99 ron minimum.    At Tesco the Momentum 99 is only 5 pence a litre more than Tesco 95 ron, so about £2.50 a tank extra.

Maybe cheaper than 95 Ron costs at ESSO, BP, Shell, Gulf, Texaco etc.

PS

No UK Retailers sell 98 ron Super unleaded anymore.   But the 97 min might exceed that as the 99 ron min can sometimes be 'Continental European 100 ron.

Depends when, where sourced, imported, last of Winter Fuel in from Europe after distribution of winter fuel has be distributed,

and where Royal Dutch Shell / Greenergy are bunkering.

Check out petrolprices.com for the pricing in the area you're moving to.

Tesco should be the cheapest along with ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury etc.   Same 95 Ron Unleaded at Supermarkets as 95 Ron at the Big Branded filling stations with 95 ron with no special additives or detergent packages.

?

Do new cars with Long Life Oil actually need 'Detergents'?  Not IMO.

the Super Unleaded extra 'octane booster' / ethanol should be just lovely.  5 pence a litre extra is fine for Super Unleaded,

10 pence a litre or more for Shell V-Power Nito + is crazy IMO.

Thanks everyone for the great info.

Don't worry, starting in October all petrol stations in EU must use unified labeling for all fuels. Gasoline fuels will be using "E" letter in a circle followed with a number representing a ratio of bio components present in the fuel (e.g. E5, E10 or E85). Your car should work with any of them (may be except for E85, which contains 85 % of bio-ethanol, I am not 100% sure here). More info can be found at http://www.fuel-identifiers.eu/docs/QA-consumers-EN.pdf.

The 1.5TSIs sold in the UK have apparently been mapped to run on 95 RON minimum, and WILL benefit from 98 RON fuel.

Those mapped for some other territories with lower octane fuels will not benefit from higher octanes.

The use of petrol with an octane rating higher than 95 RON in does not result in either a noticeable increase in power nor lower fuel consumption in vehicles for which unleaded petrol 95/min 92 or 93 RON is specified.
On vehicles using prescribed petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce fuel consumption.

At least, that is the way I read the manual and my fuel filler lid

The manual also suggests that E10 is as biodiverse as Karoq 1.5 owners can get

^^^ So that will be 97 ron in the uk or 99 ron as VW Group seem to have never bothered that the UK Wholesellers & Retailers stopped producing 98 Octane.

So many lost in translation circumstances because of how fuel is named in German, CZ, Spain, UK.    the UK is simple 'Unleaded' or Super Unleaded'

Some have '98 recommended and 95 minimum',  other world regions may have lower than 95 minimum.

That reminds me of how easy it is to snap off  the fuel filler lid,

Having ran a Karoq SEL 1.5Tsi manual for 7 months and 7,101 miles (more than 10,000 km) on regular 95 unleaded at 49.3MPG. Picture of our petrol cap we have 18" alloys with 215/50 tyres fitted.
