Brake discs - reasonable?

Featured Replies

Am I being unreasonable? Picked up my new to me vrs just less than two weeks ago. When I collected it, there was a grinding noise on braking - I thought it was due to the car being stood.

On inspection, there seems to be scoring of the front discs.

Am I being unreasonable to expect pretty much perfect discs on an £18.5k car with less than 10k on the clock?

Cheers.

Yep I would agree with you, I wouldn’t be happy with discs like that on any car that I had purchased recently.

Rear discs on VAG cars always suffer. Mine were bad and I replaced them with Padgid Discs and Pads on the back and they seem to have lasted much better. They have been on for 15K miles now.

Put your concerns in writing to the Dealer Principal, and if not satisfied by the reply then contact Skoda UK for an opinion,

they are their Approved Dealers and retailers of Skoda Approved Used cars.

Not unreasonable to expect no grinding, and the scored / corroded disc advisory that a customer getting a service would be getting as they tried to up-sell new discs and pads,

but did you test drive the car, then look at it,

and were you handed the Technicians report that ever car in a Skoda Workshop supposedly has done?

The 100 point pre sale safety checks and road test will have been getting done anyway according to Skoda UK and their advertising for Skoda Approved Used cars.

The first time I saw the car was when I picked it up. Stupidly I overlooked the discs. No technicians report unfortunately.

The dealer has asked me to send photos so we'll see what they say.

How old is the car?

I wouldn't be happy with that on a car with that mileage - is there much of a lip on the discs?

To me i'd have thought that its possibly been sat for a period of time in a Marine / seaside / port environment where theres a salty environment as were only just in October so its unlikley to be road salt surface corrosion.

I saw your in Liverpool so googled the Skoda dealer and its next tot he port - is this where you got it?

When my car is cleaned at the local hand wash, the wheel cleaner can cause surface rust. This in turn causes temporary grinding/grabbing only.

My discs are not perfect but work fine after 27000 miles.

Definitely complain about permanent grinding or abnormal wear.

Well, it's with the sales manager to see if they'll do the work. If they say no I won't be happy!

Difficult to tell how bad the scoring is from the photos. Maybe a stone has got stuck between the pad and the disc? You'd hope that if it was the pads down to the limit that would have been picked up and sorted before the car was sold. 10k miles would not be very long for pads to last either.

One of my front discs was slightly scored by a stone shortly after I replaced the discs/pads. Little bit annoying but not worth replacing the discs again for.

I wouldn't go in all guns blazing. Probably just ask them to investigate/fix the cause of the grinding FOC.

It's just a year old.

It was bought from a place called Colne, in East Lancashire.

Yes, that'll be my approach. I'm not an all guns blazing kinda bloke so we'll see what they say and take it from there.

Have you tried to do a few heavy brakings from speed ? Just to try and remove the rust layer.

It's not just a rust layer, they're scored.

It's now booked in next Friday to have pads and discs changed. No mention of money from them, so far...!

Every second hand car that I have bought that has had a carefull owner has had discs like that, some of them even shuddered and kicked back violently through the steering wheel.

Every single one of them resolved itself by my usual (then) spirited driving before i got round to buying the new parts, within a couple of days no juddering, within a week discs looked like freshly machined new ones.

Now that I drive like an old fart for economy every now and then I have to give the brakes a severe punishment until they are faded and smoking if not the ABS will not even work when I really need it from speed, laden, downhill etc.

Had to do the new(er MK2 a couple of nights ago, the discs are now as smooth as a babys bum but they are glazed and the pedal is lacking some bite so perhaps these pads dont like it, maybe they are glazed and will bed in.

IMO its been like that for carefully driven cars since they took the asbestos out of the pads, when my father retired he would ask me to sort out the brakes on his MK1 Polo every time he visited especially the handbrake which only had a couple of notches and would not hold on the ones he was strong enough to get it to, all I would do was drive it like I had stolen it!

A couple of hours spent at the dealer whilst they changed the front discs and pads.

The cost, according to the invoice, was charged to sales; so no cost to me. They also changed all four centre caps as one had a little corrosion.

Unfortunately though, I forgot to ask them to not wash it. They must've used one of those plastic blade things to dry it - the result is about five or six long scratches on the bonnet and a couple on the roof. They've all polished out with the exception of a one inch scratch on the bonnet.  No point in raising the issue as a) they'll deny it and b) they'll deny it again.
