Dual Rear Fog Lights

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a Skoda Octavia Mk III 67 plate. Does the car have both a near side and offside rear fog lights?

The reason for asking is there is no near side fog light on when I switch the rear fog lights on. There appears to be a bulb but when I asked the service department at my local Skoda garage to replace it, I was told there was only one rear fog light and the bulb was for another light. Is the Skoda garage correct?

Thanks for your help

Only the offside is enabled (for RHD models). You can activate the near side if you want. You’ll need VCDS or similar though.

Is there any company in the Cambridge / Haverhill area that has this VCDS service?

There are people on here who can do it for you in exchange for a few beer tokens.

Theres a map somewhere of their locations. Failing that, try the VCDS section and ask.

Buy yourself an ODBeleven and do it yourself and turn on a lot more goodies besides.

Change Skoda garages too. If they didn't even know something as simple as that you can have both fog lights working, I wouldn't trust them to do anything else.

How do you change this with ODBeleven?

Having followed a car one night with twin fog lights on and long after the fog had lifted it was hard to tell when the brakes were applied. Maybe there is only one for a reason. Oh, and being blinded is no fun either.

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations allow 2 rear fog lights in the UK if they are a matched pair, but pretty much all cars only have 1 lit as standard on the offside from factory. It's a tricky one, some argue 2 makes a car more visible in poor conditions, others will say it's easier to misinterpret them as brake lights. Either 1 on offside, or 1 on each side are valid legal combinations but the latter has more potential to dazzle other users. Neither technically wrong.

If used correctly they shouldn't really blind, because they are less dazzling in poor visibility conditions. Then there's all the idiots driving around with front and rear fogs on in the middle of summer and perfect clear conditions, but that's a separate issue.

Not sure if this has changed on the facelift though.

...Personally, I would prefer two reverse on the light cluster and two fogs, lower down, on the bumper.

Lower down, they separate the fogs from the brake lights AND dazzle less, due to the lower placement.

By using the appropriate app on it or by going in and changing the coding yourself. For the sake of just a few credits just use the app.

That makes far more sense, it makes it easier for the following driver to differentiate the red lights when in different positions, in the same cluster makes it very difficult. I agree there is no reason to have fogs and spots on in bright conditions unless you are an idiot.

...And have you noticed how as soon as the early dark nights start, more drivers switch on their fog lights?  In summer, its a few here and there but at lighting up time in autumn/winter, it seems to be every tenth car or so!

"OOOH, its getting dark at four-thirty-I'd better burn out the oncoming drivers optic nerves"!

When the brakes are applied a third high level brake light also turns on which is well separated from both the other fog lights and the brake lights :emo:

  • 3 years later...

We exported our 2015 Octavia Scout to Belgium last year (2021). Had to replace the headlights but car was passed for it's Belgian MOT with the existing single rear fog lamp in UK position. This year it has just failed because the regulations changed last September. Shame nobody told the garages because it wasn't picked up when we got it serviced. We now need to have it modified and two fog lights seems to be the way to go.

Local Skoda garage "thinks" it can be recoded but hasn't done it before so isn't sure. My question is, can it? Normal bulbs in both sides, not LED lights. Car first registered April 2015 so guessing not a facelift model.

Could anyone confirm please whether it is possible and how they can do it for us, so I can pass on the info?

Taking in into the garage tomorrow. Many thanks in advance.

This worked on my 2015 build Octavia Estate which had non-LED rear lights:

Controller 09 - Central Electronics

16 - Security Access - enter 31347

10 - Adaptations

Change the 2 channels listed below - scroll to just over halfway down the long list of adaptation channels to find them. Do them one after the other, and do not come out of the adaptations until you have finished. If you do, you will have to close the controller and go back in and enter the security access code again.

You have a couple of options here - the original values are:

(4)-Leuchte26NSL LA72-Lichtfunktion A 26 - Nebelschlusslicht wenn keinAnhaenger gesteckt und Rechtsverkehr

(4)-Leuchte27NSL RC6-Lichtfunktion A 27 - Nebelschlusslicht wenn kein Anhaenger gesteckt und Linksverkehr

which translates roughly as rear fog lights when trailer not connected and right hand traffic and rear fog lights when trailer not connected and left hand traffic.  So, for use on the continent you could just swap the values over and the left fog light would light up.

A third option is available - Nebelschlusslicht wenn kein Anhaenger gesteckt - rear fog light when trailer not connected. I set both of mine to this value and they both come on, but if you set them both to Nebelschlusslicht wenn kein Anhaenger gesteckt und Linksverkehr they both come on as well.

This has been tested on LED Hatch & Combi rear clusters, and standard Combi.

Change (4)-Leuchte26NSL LA72-Lichtfunktion A 26 to Nebelschlusslicht wenn kein Anhaenger gesteckt

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much. I will translate it into Dutch and take it with me to the garage. Fingers crossed!

Do European Skodas have both rear fogs or is an extra fog fitted to UK models and the original fitting de-activated?

From what I understand, they all have the one on the other side of what they drive on is turned off

I actually have memories of this being discussed at the time. I’m sure it transpired that UK models had both fitted with one activated with RoW models only having the left side fitted with a dummy on the right.

It's in the garage now. I guess I will find out shortly. Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks so much @PetrolDave. Not sure if the garage needed your notes or not, but they managed to recode my fog lamps so both work and I'm just back from a successful return visit to the vehicle testing centre with a new MOT/autokeuring certificate. We are now good to go again here in Belgium. Bedankt!
