Octane Booster Octavia RS 230

Featured Replies

Hi all

Has anyone with RS 230 (petrol) tried an Octane booster for their car.

In Ireland we can't get Super Unleaded (98 Ron) anymore, I've heard they can work and give decent gains.

Thoughts

Thanks

i thought you were on the border? all BP stations and a few maxols in the north have got at least one super pump.

All that proves is its combustible. Its most likely just be little bottles of high octane fuel.

One of those mixed in a tank of regular fuel isn't going to do anything for performance.

You're just paying between £5-10 for half a litre of fuel.

Haha...these guys dumped stuff in their car but never actually tested it. I spoke with one of Europe's best ECU remappers (Joe Power - TDR Performance) and he says most octane boosters don't do much but there was one (can't recall name Nitrous Formula i think) that actually really does work. He said one car he used it on after a remap was boosted by about 40bph on the dyno in addition to the remap boost.

I found this video also which is a bit more scientific than those loads at least :-)

Best way to see if it works is buy a small one shot bottle of octane booster such as Millers Oils Petrol Power EcoMax and see if makes any difference to the power or economy, that way you can make your own decision on whether you want to buy more or try something different.

That's the plan really, was just wondering if anyone had tried them, seen a gain

I have tried it (diesel version) in the past, but on a diesel engined Golf where it did make a difference, I haven't tried it on the RS though.

Might try sample bottle and see if there is any improvement.

As they say 'I can't hurt' I hope haha

I really don't think it is worth it. The difference in power is very small, a few hp maybe along with  1 or 2 mpg at best but very difficult to confirm.  I always use Momentum or Sainsbury's super as it's readily available nearby. Under no circumstances would I waste my money on V Power, it's a rip off and the BP version is only 97 octane so even less difference and also a rip off.

Your Sainsbury Super Unleaded is 97 ron minimum as well, but then only 5 pence more than Sainsbury 95 ron and still cheaper than many others 95 ron.

Costco Super Unleaded is 99 ron Minimum like Tesco Momentum 99.

So a more useful question would be but perhaps for another thread, would it be worth running 50 percent 99 and 50 percent 95 to achieve better gains than the snake oil, would that work ( esp. for those mapped and needing 99 or would just lead to running problems)

I think key thing here to remember is higher octane fuel does matter... Ask any race car driver. Problem is do we trust the petrol stations to really be giving us what they say.

Over here is Rep Ireland we got the new Circle K Miles Plus unleaded which costs 1.58 per litre and normal unleaded is 1.47 but both are still Ron 95....however its nothing like what Super Plus used to be which was Ron 98.

So we get equally expensive fuel but less Octane, its the Irish way.... Lol

Buy Race Fuel then and put it in with the filling station fuel,  but no idea what that will cost you in Ireland or how importation works, taxes etc.

The Race Drivers in Ireland must be able to buy 102 or 107 ron. With tuned or remapped cars.

I use it occasionally in with 99 ron or straight.

I would put your car on the dyno with the filling station fuel you can buy, then again with the higher octane fuel or with the octane booster added and see if you consider the expense is worth it for day to day driving.

Ahh no that's too much, I just want to get some nice Ron 98 by adding in a booster. But I just don't like adding things to the fuel.... It's a mental thing really

Have you had your car on a dyno yet?

No 98 ron sold in the UK since BP and others went to 97 ron minimum or Shell, Greenergy / Tesco with 99 ron minimum.

No dyno yet, non near me really.... We don't even have 97 here... 95 or nothin

& there are thousands of cars in Ireland running just that.  GTI's, vRS, STI's, S, RS etc etc

I have a full tank of Super Unleaded and cans of fuel when i head off where i can not get it if in a car that needs it to run well and off for some sporting driving.

I have been to Ireland and have done the same thing. 20 litres in the boot of 102 ron to put in the unleaded.

True but why does VAG then recommend 98 for GTi and RS.. Id imagine that's just a safety note as they don't want people tipping any old stuff down the tank

There are cars like the Mk2 Fabia vRS that have 98 as the recommended petrol on the Filler Flap and 95 Min that the EU Type Approved cars must run on

but Skoda do not mention that in Brochures or Owners Manuals.

Red flap Mk2 Fabia 1.4 TSI 132kW.

Green VW Sirocco.

There are several compounds that can be used as anti knock agents, so do you know which one you will tipping down down your tank to boost the octane rating?

At best you will see about 1% improvement in power/economy per octane rating increase.

Nope afraid I don't really... I would have thought these things are regulated to ensure they don't do any harm... But some reading for me to do tonight
