Problematic fabia 1.2 tsi

Featured Replies

Hi

i have 2014 fabia 1.2tsi that seems to be developing some weird faults

any hints and tips would be appreciated as I am not very cash rich

the car has two faults but none of them come up as a fault on diagnostic

first the car has a stutter and Miss fire when cold and occasionally when warm sometimes no power pulling away

second fault is you put the windows up and the hazard lights start to flash

please any advise would be great

Stutter misfire is likely Sparkplug(s). Also known faults can be coil and/or leads.

How many miles has it done? Have plugs been changed, and did they fit the correct type NGK IZFR6P7 or VAG equivalent?

Get the battery tested - might be on it's way out

1.2tsi mk2 fabia with CBZA or CBZB engine

Depending on useage, 50k may be time to change plugs. But they often last longer. So...

It is fairly common to have coilpak failing giving similar symptoms. Easy to change

Check leads too they go from excess heat, but 2014 should have the better leads protected with corrugated trunking

If you change plugs yourself, you will need a lead puller and decent T bar plug socket

Cheapest for genuine plugs is opieoils, select pack of 4, £47.95. Apply discount code BRISKODA for 10% off, there may be other codes that offer more discount

Coilpak

Good call re coil pack - these do fail after a few years but it's cheap and easy to change. When starting to fail and cold/damp they keep dropping to two cylinders as the units have two coils each feed two cylinders - hence the term wasted spark (hence misfire/pulling power). I had one fail on my old Octavia a few weeks ago (same coil pack)

Re changing plugs - do you need the puller and T bar plug socket as at this age this is still the EA111 1.2 single cam 8 valve engine?

Re windows up / hazards - that's why I suggested the battery. If low/cream crackered in some way - this could cause wierd issues such as this and if voltage low the coil pack may be performing underpar.  I was just trying to think of something that "could" cause both issues.

My coil pack (which I think is the same as the EA111 8v) failed with a big hole in the side (see holes bottom left of the photo:-

Yes you do need them.

Its impossible to remove the metal spark plug boot without it as its too far down to grab hold of, and its a very tight fit onto the plug. Pulling on the lead will break the lead.

Good quality T bar socket (avoid ultra cheap) has a UJ joint, again needed for awkward access to cyl 4.

Agreed best to check battery as often can give weird symptoms when failing.

BTW a Skoda dealer will charge hundreds of pounds for changing these items. £100+ for plugs £250+ for coil and leads. (Been there and learnt my lesson)

Just presumed as they were on the side they were easy - sounds like a plan then.

Presuming battery OK (not convinced) the coil pack probably worth doing next as it's a common fail, really cheap and so easy to do. One connector , 4 leads and three easy to remove bolts. Took me a couple of minutes on the Octavia. These engines need good plugs though.

@Ronin264

I see you are @ Lennoxtown.

 ?

Which main dealership does your servicing?

Best get who ever at the Dealership said the Spark Plugs last 70,000 miles to show you were the Manufacturers Guidelines Show that is is when they should be replaced.

Spark Plugs can last that long, but the Minor & Major Fixed Servicing or Major & Major with Variable Servicing that Skoda Main Dealers & VW Group Approved Repairers has the Spark Plugs being changed at 40,000 miles.  Or the should be.

If not getting changed they should be removed and checked, if removing them then you change them anyway.

???

In 2017 was the Brake Fluid changed as per Manufacturer /Skoda's Guidelines. @3years.

In 2018 has the Air Filter been replaced as per Manufacturers guidelines.  @4 years / 40,000 miles, Or even just checked?

Had the battery checked and the coil pack seems fine

im going to try a set of plugs first

it is the 4 cylinder 1.2 105hp engine

the dealer also mentioned the fuel filter may cause an issue

thanks again for ur help

brian

Which dealer, and are you talking to the technician?   Some change fuel filters on petrols and diesels at 2nd major service as part of the service and some do not.   Where you are going appear to not think changinf spark plugs at 40,000 miles is required.

Ask to keep the removed plugs (as its your right) and post pictures of them, so we can have a look. If new plugs don't do the trick, remember you can change the coil yourself quite easily for around £30. Its not difficult to do. Dealer will be a lot more expensive.

Btw coils usually fail internally, and look fine externally, they don't all look like BigJohn's

Indeed the previous one looked fine when it failed. I'm on my third now on the Octavia.

As @xman mentioned he coil pack is cheap and easy to do - change it anyway as well as the plugs.  They are a common fail and don't always throw a code unless they have totally gone.

One test that sometimes shows it up (sometime not though)!  Whilst parked and in neutral with the engine warm and running at tickover - briefly floor the throttle - if it stutters /sounds a bit like a 2cv (it has dropped to two cylinders) then it is probably the coil pack.

Fuel filter will not cause a mis-fire
