Dsg 6 or 7 speed

Featured Replies

Evening all, I've my S3 for over 2 months now and I bought it second hand (17 plate) advertised as 7 speed dsg... I've only just noticed during a long run over the weekend that top gear appears to be 6?.?...

My question is .. is my car a 6 speed or is something fundamentally wrong? My first thought was 7th most be reverse.

Thank guys.

Hi,

It depends on the engine you have.

As far as I know, on MY2017 S3, DSG7 was only available on TSI 150 / TSI 180 / TDI 120 / TDI 150.

DSG7 became available for TDI 190 only on MY2018... at least in France. I don't know what about the TSI 220, that you guys can buy in the UK (or in Belgium too), Lucky you ;) !

Hope this helps...

Thanks anyway.

Don't get confused between the less powerful dry-clutch DSG-7 and the just introduced wet-clutch DSG-7, found in the higher power engines.

Sounds like u have the usual wet-clutch DSG-6.

6 speed test would be right for your model year and engine.

Same here, 67 plate Tdi 150 documented as DSG7 but only 6 speed in reality.

And a lot less problematic than the 7 speed dry if i'm not mistaken, so don't feel hard done by.......

Thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated.

The DSG7 known as DQ200 effectively had a lot of problems. VAG had changed the oil type on this gear box, which caused damages on the sealing. Thus the mechatronic was not isolated anymore from oil and failed... After new oil spec introduction, the problems massively decreased.

On the new DSG7, ti should be the either DQ380/381 or DQ500/501, I didn't find the right information yet.

The new wet 7 speed is the DQ381 for the AWD version, based on the DQ500 used on the RS3.

This is all very confusing...for a numpty like me.

`DQ` this, `DQ` that.

`6`, `7`.

`Wet`, `Dry`.

I have a new 1.5 TSI DSG on order. Can anyone tell me what my gearbox will be and should I be concerned at all?

Many thanks.

I'd be concerned.................If i hadn't done a bit of research before i ordered it.

@mandp But you will have a warranty anyway, so not too much to be concerned about really.

Not a super helpful comment.. Im in the same boat as mandp.. I think I did more research than the vast majority of Superb buyers but still Im not exactly sure, is it a "bad" gearbox, is the 1.5 TSi engine bad in itself.. etc. I read alot of contradictory facts...

In the end tho I put my trust in that the factory has got their act together and aren't still manufacturing gearboxes and engines with known problems (unless they've fixed it, ofcourse).. fingers crossed. And if thats not the case I hope the problems arise within the warranty period.

@pjkw My reference doesn't even seem to know how many gears their new car will have.........

I think i would have wanted to know that at least. But fair comment, not very helpful and i don't know the answer because mine is the (much) older type.

If someone tells you now that it is a bad gearbox, what are your options, can you / would you cancel the order?

How on earth can anyone have a placed order without knowing how many gears their gearbox will have? It's printed on the very offer you get from any dealer together with the rest of specifications.

Figuring which of the DSG7's is trickier yes, but it's fair to assume that for any engine up to 250Nm (as is the 1.5 TSI), it's the older DQ200 7 speed dry (250Nm rated) that goes with it. No need to put a stronger or more expensive gearbox.

Anything above that (2.0 TDI 150 & 190) should come with the new, DSG7 wet DQ380/381 (depending on FWD or AWD) that handles up to 420Nm and replaces the previous DSG6 wet DQ250.

For all the worried owners, I personally had a "bad" DQ200 dry for 5 years, and during the last 2 years running extra torque, more than it could officially handle, and never had any issues with it. Next owner hasn't had any issues either for 3 years now so 8 in total. I wasn't the only one. If you're too worried add extra warranty if possible and enjoy the car.

@Bap33

The issue with internal corrosion that caused the Worldwide recall of millions of 2009-2012 DQ200 & service campaign in Europe to change the Synthetic Oil to Mineral & do a software change was not a massive issue with failures.  Just to VW Groups pocket really.

The DQ200 late 2012 with Synthetic Oil from the factory that never got '34F7' carried out are failing now in some cars, that is an issue as Skoda are rubbering the owners.

Then 2013-2015 there was the Heat / Pressure issue with some DQ200 DSG, hence Service Campaign '34H5', a software update due to some MCU's leaking, cracking etc.

That is an issue.

Then 2014/15 til 2018 there is the Clutch Slip Issues with DQ200 DSG's, so another software update and clutchpack updates, covered in TPI's.

Then now the DQ200's in 1.5TSI's that are having not only the 1.5TSI Evo issue but are having 'cutting out' / loss of drive issues.

So basically out of the 2,200 DQ200 DSG's that Skoda produce a day maybe only a very few have issues, but really it is 10 years on and they still can not get their act together.

Someone somewhere in VW / Skoda is a comedian.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.  Doubt it.

I can probably cancel the order, it was just the other day that the order was made.. but no, I wouldnt cancel, Im hoping that theyve got their act together.. I also think the vast majority of drivetrains works fine, even tho the dq200 have had more issues than average.

And yes, my order says 7 speed DSG but no more information than that.

My order form says the following:

`SUPERB HATCH SE L Executive 1.5 TSI 150PS DSG 1968' (no idea what the `1968` refers to)

During the ordering process there was no discussion regarding the number of gears (its an auto and I'm happy with that), nothing about `Wet` or `Dry`, and no mention of `DQ`

As `pjkw` above I'm relying on the designers to have a solution for all the `ills` by the time I take delivery in July / August.

I wasn't at all worried before I read this thread so I'm going back to that state...thank you!

@Skoffski You're probably right. However after 4 VAG vehicles, the main problem I've heard/read about DSG7 DQ200 was this sealing and oil change story. It probably did not affect thousands of vehicles, but as often, the few 'victim' are much more efficient to make their dissatisfaction being heard than the hundreds of thousands of happy users... That's it... :wondering:

The ongoing issues from those with pre 2013 vehicles and then post 2013 is a disgrace as you will see if you look at some of the pinned threads there are in various sections of this forum and the forums for the other 3 brands.  Not all come to social media with their tales of how they have been treated disgracefully.
