Who opened all my windows?!!!!

Featured Replies

This morning I found all the windows open on my pre FL scout.

Yes, it has been raining heavily over night.

Yes, the car is all wet inside.

Yes, I have had to throw out my sweets and trade stuff that has been soaked in water.

I assume this is a '(dis)comfort' mode thing to make my life easier by reminding me I need to wash the inside of my car once in a while. It is the third time this has happened. So far it has only happened when the car is safely on the drive, and nothing was taken from it. I am concerned that it will happen when I am out on a job and I will then have stuff taken from the car.

Is there a way to remove this function completely so that even in some random fault the car stays closed and secure?

Thank you.

It's likely you've (or a child?) accidentally held the unlock button on the remote. It can certainly happen if the keys are in your pockets with other things.

Pretty sure it can be disabled with VCDS or similar but I can't remember the exact option you're looking for.

Just to point out, if it you are accidentally pressing the unlock button, even with the windows up you might find things go missing :)

Cheers.

Definitely no children involved (as far as I know ;)).

The doors were still locked and it happened over night when the keys were well out of range, so I am doubting I did it accidentally. I have pocket locked/unlocked before and I have to be within 2m of the car to get anything to happen, even when I want it to.

Previous times it might have been raining too, can't quite remember. Just wondering if it might be water into the door?

I had this happen to me overnight once, I put it down to me sitting on the keys which were in my back pocket. It was dry overnight, but coming to the car with all the windows down was a bit unnerving. I've actually got rain closing so if it rained it would have solved the problem for me!

I've since gotten into the habit of taking my keys out of my pocket when I sit down, which has merely increased the frequency of losing my keys...

It's a real PITA when it happens. I am going to have to test holding the button down for a long time when out of normal unlocking range to see it it is that.

brb

Ahhh, interesting. Remote has short range when I am on my drive, but about 20+m range from my upstairs window!

Maybe the unlock has been pressed long enough to open the windows, then a short press to relock the door? This will be annoying to allow for.

I have had all my windows opened on one car 3 times while the same contractors was doing road work and it was their radio / communication system.

Also had my car doors unlocked and the car was activated when i opened the door the next morning and the engine immobilized.

I thought some glitz.  Then later i find the neighbours van has been broken into and i suspect someone was using a jammer nearby before doing the van.

If the unlock button is pressed but a door is not opened the car will re-lock itself anyway (passive locking).

Ahhhh, yes!

Great security, lock the doors but leave all the windows open!

That's a safety thing rather than a security thing. They system isn't designed with unintentional window opening in mind. They did increase the length of time required to hold down the button before global closing is activated. To be honest it's better turned off in my view.

Yes, if I can deactivate it that would be best.

I can't see any occasion when opening all the windows by remote would be needed or helpful for me.

That is an option for sure.

This is actually terrifying. It's not that I store gold bars in my car, but the idea of it being so unprotected as to open up to a simple walkie-talkie gives me a sense of dread.

Do you mind sharing what car exactly it was?

It's useful for those occasions when your car is parked up for hours at a time on an extremely hot day and you can lower all the windows to release the hot air that has built up over that time.

Now burning the bridge of your nose due to storing your sunglasses in the overhead glasses holder on a hot day, that's a different matter!

@A-Lagopus

The 3 times that the windows opened fully was over a few months with a 2016 SEAT Alhambra and it was the 2nd time it happened that i new the same company was working near the car and then again on the 3rd occasion.

Recently it was my Mitsubishi Shogun that has an aftermarket alarm set up.

Years ago i had a Toyota Camry that the doors sometimes were unlocked if left near a Taxi Office.

It happened a few times and i wondered about it, then i mentioned it to someone that worked on the taxis and he said it was not uncommon near their transmitter.

@Roottootemoot

thanks for sharing this!

I'm really surprised it's not more widely known, considering the possible consequences.

Now I just want to wrap my car in tin foil.

I wonder if there are any ways to protect your car from this "jacking", other than just disabling remote key fob entirely...

Lesson 101 is buy a Skoda, leave nothing in it, maybe just leave the doors unlocked, and park next to something more desirable.

Dont leave any loose change in it as it doubles the value!

The range on the remote is a lot farther than you'd think...

And the window thing can be handy. Have used it a few times to cool off the car while its outside before a trip, or when i forget id the windows open and cant be bothered walking out to the car before bed..

It annoyed me one day, but it was really the stupid 2 step unlock.. it started pelting rain walki g to the car with spuderick and shopping, and instead of unlocking the back doors, i apparently held it down for long enough to start opening the windows!

So we were wet while i fumbled to get us in and car was wet because the f'king windows were open while i was faffing around. Only had the car 3weeks that day :D

I feel your pain Maker_of_Things - this has happened to me and typically it was overnight when the heavens opened - the car gods have a sick, sick sense of humour it seems..

Electronic jacking and weirdness aside I can only echo the advice of others and keep your keys away from your back pocket or anywhere the buttons can't inadventently get pressed by yourself or others.

It's a nice feature for the two days of summer we have in the UK but I'm not sure the advantages outweigh the obvious disadvantages. 🤔

It's the second thing I turn off on my cars, after single door opening.

With my Passat it's usually the boot I find wide open rather than the windows. It would be nice if they could find some way of making the buttons harder to press by accident in ones pocket.

@AnddentonSee my post 9th from the top.

I haven't performed a DIY vasectomy since.

Yes, it would seem that sod's law says that it will happen when it is going to get rained into over night.

With that, and getting soaked at Tatton Flower Show. I am still trying to completely dry the car out.

In this heat, getting in it is like entering a sauna!
