Oil Consumption 1.5TSi DSG

Featured Replies

This morning whilst on the way to work I got a warning to check the oil level. This is in a 6 month old 1.5 TSi DSG that's done approx 5000 miles. When I got to work checked immediately and it was showing right on min of the dipstick, left it 20mins and it was then showing 1/2 full. I left it to cool down completely then ran it for 10mins, left to cool for 5mins and the level was a bit difficult to tell. It was probably somewhere in the middle of the last two readings.

Is this normal "burn in" for these engines?

I spoke to the dealer and they said not sure - can't get it in for a few weeks but you could top it up if you want.

I picked up some from an Audi dealer down the road from the office and added 0.5l but didn't get a chance to check it to see where the level is now.

Has the oil level dropped drastically since the last time you checked it?

To be honest on a 6 month old car I wouldn't expect to have a need to check it - so I can't say if it's dropped as I've never checked it.

What I forgot to add was that the warning was present until I parked up at the office this morning but had cleared when I started it to go home. Only drove 10 miles before adding the extra oil and the warning never came on during that short drive.

@scfnet

What is the person at the Dealerships actual job and has it anything to do with being a technician?

Whoever they are should read an owners manual, or get some training.

What oil did you pick up at the Audi garage, was it 5w 30 FS III so VW504 or 0W 20 FS IV so VW 508 ?

This is about a 1.6TDI,

but read the owners manual,

there are 1.5TSI using oil threads on this forum,, using oil, or not enough oil in anyway at the PDI.

PS

Even if you had not added oil, you opened the bonnet for more than 30 seconds and the warning can stay off for 100 km / 60 miles.

Not many at a Dealership Service Desk know that either.

The were the service reception so I assume non technical. One of the guys used to be a tech I think but I'm not who I spoke to. They did manage to get the correct oil grade and that is what I got from the Audi parts dept (nearest VW group garage). They tried to give me VW504 but I had been told VW508 so it was swapped. It wasn't VW branded but Castrol Edge LL IV FW 0W-20 but it is marked as VW508

That 60 mile issue clearing would make sense, 10 miles to the garage and 56 from there to home after I opened the bonnet again

Thanks for the useful threads - missed those in a search.

I'll warm it up tomorrow and check the levels and top it up to mid range and keep and eye on it. Probably should be doing this anyway but it does get missed!

Reading those threads I probably should have checked it on delivery to see if it actually contained enough in the first place. Nothing was mentioned on handover but you do kind of hope it would have been inspected properly and had sufficient fluids!

Thanks

Best take a minute and dip it stone cold tomorrow without the engine being started,  just to see where it is and at least at top of cross hatch.

Then when at work allow 4 minutes from stopping and dip it and compare.

If enough oil in then you only ever need do cold dips. You know where it should be.

The VW Group dipsticks are pathetic and the 'At Operating Temperature Check's' is about checking at Filling Stations.

People want to know there is enough oil before a trip IMO.

Even better, I wasn't actually planning on going anywhere tomorrow . I'd always assumed warm was the best check but cold it will be. I agree the dipstick is not great.

Total top has been 0.75l, It's now right at the top of the hatchings.

I'll keep an eye on it and hope it doesn't drop any more
