HANKOOK SealGuard

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just done over 1000 miles in the kodiaq, and i have just noticed a screw in one of the tyres! Just wondering, when researching on black circles for a new one.

I have seen the tyres are SealGuard, just wondering what that means? and is it worth taking the screw out, to check if its gone through the plies.

Cheers

SealGuard is basically some goop on the inside of the tyre that seal small punctures.

Whether you have to get the tyre repaired I’ve forgotten, but there are threads here on Briskoda that cover self-sealing tyres.

These would appear to be similar to the Pirelli Seal Inside tyres many of us have fitted to our Kodiaqs. I asked the question some time ago as to whether this technology actually works and the consensus of opinion said they do, so in theory you can pull out your screw and the tyre should seal itself. You shouldn't need to replace the tyre just for a screw in the tread, the sidewall would be a different matter.

I do question why a can of sealant gunk is still supplied when the car is fitted with seal inside tyres though, although it could be because we might not fit seal inside tyres when the originals need replacing.

I hope I never need to use it, but just to be on the safe side, I bought a temporary spare and a car jack to keep in the boot.

Pull the screw out, what have you got to lose ?

Either way you have to remove the screw.

If the tyre pressure remains constant the self-sealing technology has done its job and no further action is required.

The information provided by both Pirelli and Hankook aren't conclusive either way for if you're supposed to replace or repair the tyre.

Most tyre fitters won't entertain a repair on a self-sealing tyre, as the repair process is much more labour intensive than for a regular tyre. They can be repaired, but very few fitters will be prepared to do it.

If it were me, and after removing the screw the pressure remained constant, I'd be leaving it.
