Rust !!!!

Featured Replies

I just purchased a 2010 octavia estate and have a question. I did not notice when I privately bought it there is rust on the tailgate all along where the number plate lights are and also rust, peeling paint on the bottom of the bonnet grille.

My question is what is the bodywork warranty on 2010 (60) plate Skodas and do you think it would come under warranty

Not sure but heard the warranty is 10 years. I think the newer ones are 12 years

I think your only chance would be if the vehicle has a full Skoda service history where the bodywork has been inspected at regular intervals. If it has been taken outside the network they will use the famous get out clauses.

It has a full service history but only half done at Skoda

How long ago did it visit a Skoda garage? Was it under 2 years or more than 5 years for example?

Last time official skoda was March last year 2018

That gives you a glimmer of hope if you contact that dealer and ask if they inspected the bodywork for rust and did they put their findings in writing assuming you don't already have this paperwork when you bought the car privately.;)

I have the service book which has a bodywork page adjoining the service record and its blank. I assume nothing was picked up

@Mjr001 Welcome.

So out of the Paint Warranty and the Corrosion Warranty is about Perferations / holes in panels, but that can be challenged.

The Body Inspection should be at every Service at Skoda Main Dealerships / Approved Repairers.

Skoda often says no record of done, yet there are FMDSH's and they know where it was not being done...

Since the corrosion has not been dealt with before now then really it is just tough.

But,

then maybe it was dealt with, and poorly repaired or just nothing done because a Dealership Employee said 'Not covered under warranty''.

So you need to know what has gone before,

but really the fact is you bought it with the rust and missed it as you inspected the car, best get quotes for removing rust, inhibiting, preping and painting if you can not do yourself.

I'm going to call my local dealership and see what they say. The problem is it is on the tailgate under the lip where the number plate lights are so I missed it so they may have too.

The rust is clearly visible and also lots of bubbles paint but no holes so not sure how this looks under warranty.

I also heard that there was an issue with rear wiper tubes leaking and pouring fluid inside the tailgate so this is possibly what caused it.

Mk 1 and Mk 2 Octavia's have known rust issues on tailgates (probably more common on estates).

+1 on that experience, I had a yeti with the zinc problem and was met with stonewall refusal by skoda and AC. Even if the checks have been done (they rarely are as even dealers admit that skoda almost never honour corrosion and therfore no point in doing the checks) with skoda then just say you haven't been getting the checks done and trot out the old "fair wear and tear" motto.

"Simply clever", skoda ain't stupid.

Thanks. I may not bother phoning them

No point ever phoning other than to check someone qualified will be there to look, take pictures and then carry out the Warranty T&C's as set out.

That will require an inspection of the Corrosion / Paint and checks that it is an original panel and original paint, or a past warranty to repair to the T&C's in the Warranty.

No point some Call Handler / Receptionist giving an opinion.

The only way to be sure is take it in. The rear around the number plate light may get done if you have a decent dealer but around the grille will more than likely be down to stone chip damage that has been ignored and I doubt will be covered.

Many thanks. Will do. Nothing to lose I suppose. Makes me laugh because the 2 body shops I took it to and got quotes say it's rare for skodas to rust. Just unlucky I guess

Phoned Skoda. Told them about the rust and the supposed 10 year corrosion warranty they got all defensive but eventually they gave me the number of their approved bodyshop to take it to for an estimate.

When I spoke to the bodyshop they said the assessor would take photos, inspect the paint and then write a report to Skoda HQ.

Car booked in 5th November. Is there any literature on the corrosion guarantee anywhere. I know now they offer 12 year corrosion warranty but think when my car was new it was 10 years. My car is a late 2010 (60) plate

Can see this being a long battle. Any help or advice grateful.

Missed wording

Ask Skoda UK in writing if there are Body Inspections on record during the Service History and any identified rust / corrosion during the past years and was any actions taken and warranty work carried out.

Do you know the warranty period for a 2010 model. Was it 10 years ?

I think it was, i had a 2010 Fabia.

One with rust, but then i am a Car Sprayer and i used to do Warranty Inspectiuons and repairs so never repaired to factory finish, i did it better than that.

Body warranty is 12 years. 3 years for paint.  If your vehicle is over 3 years old,  some dealerships try to get out of it by saying it's a paint fault rather than a rust issue.

Been there.  Bought the t-shirt.

The areas you are experiencing rust is in a 'well known area'. Any skoda dealer staff who says otherwise is talking out of their Gary.

I don't mean to burst your bubble,  but even if you do get it done under warranty, there is no guarantee that will be the end of the matter.

I had the tailgate on my Octy Scout resprayed due to rust in a similar area to yours. The people they used (apparently Skoda no longer do this themselves) were absolute cluster fuskc* to the point after 18 months it had came back worse,  and in a new area as well. When I took it back to the dealership they wanted me to use the same people again. I told them to poke it.

* I was asked to remove my front and rear dashcams. However no one said anything about removing my tracker, which detected my vehicle being driven around town late at night when it should have been left to dry.

They also repeatedly left the engine idli for several hours. Just what you want on a PD engine fitted with a DPF!

Its booked into their 'approved' bodyshop. The car is immaculate apart from this rust and 1 stone chip on bonnet. They say they will assess and take photos and send to Skoda u.k.

Any words of wisdom for these clowns when they inspect it ?

Even with the Bodyshops support Skoda UK might well knock back a Warranty Claim.

They will say no perforation of the panel.

Ask them if the report said a powerful light was put behind the panel and could the light be seen through the panel?

It is just a game with them to knock back claims.

Do not accept their decision or what a Resolution Manager says.

Known issues, they know they are, and know a new panel should be fitted, but on a 9/10 year old car thats not going to happen.

So would you say this is a waste of time and I should get it sorted myself. Dont want to waste months on a lost cause.

I'm no expert but if say that maybe a washer hose in the tailgate has somehow leaked causing the rust but not sure

Have Skoda pay for it.

The Bodyshop can remove rust, treat the rust and prepare and paint the area.

That is what is required.

Just dont let Skoda take the pith.  & hopefully your paint technician is a good one.

It is their full time job.

Only odd thing is anyplace not familiar with the common rust traps on a Skoda / VW / SEAT / Audi.
