Rust !!!!

The bodyshop is the approved bodyshop of skoda, vw and skoda main dealers in town. I think it's part of the same group.

The rust is very visible around both number plate lights and electronic release but not perforations as such. Holes so they will probably wiggle out of it. Thought about removing the tailgate panel to have a look inside to see if it's there as well..

Unusual if not inside where the condensation  / H20 has been,

which is why you strip the interior trim, and treat the back of pannels with inhibitor as well and etch prime.

It is so common that it is a weekly sort of job for busy places.   There is no new issues with VW Group cars, they often go from generation of car to the next generation.

When buying cars that is why taking people familiar with that model to check with you is advised.

I have decided rather than take a day off work to get Skoda bodyshop to look at this rust I am going to write to them with photographs and in the letter say that this is a known common problem and see what response I get from them.

Any advice of what to put in the letter and also where would the best place be to send it too ?

They will still need to inspect it so you will still need to take it in.

There won't be a Skoda approved bodyshop in this land that isn't aware of the galvanic corrosion induced by the poor design of the rear number plate lights.

Prevalent on both the MkII Octavia and MkII Superb estate.

I'm not sure if to take it to the bodyshop tomorrow or wait for a response to the email I sent to Skoda on Thursday. My thinking is that once they look at it tomorrow the report will be lost in limbo for months whereas if I wait for Skoda to reply to me it's already started the ball rolling

Update on this. Car was taken to skodas bodyshop of choice who did an inspection and sent the report to Skoda.

I have just had a call saying it will not be fixed under warranty as they say its edge and fold rust and is only covered for 3 years. They also said Skoda said in their reply that they also would not repair it as a goodwill gesture.

Ridiculous as basically the body warranty is worthless as any rust on the edge or fold of a panel is not covered and any rust in the middle of a panel they would probably say is caused by stone chips.

Any ideas who to contact next to try and get them to change their mind?

How much time have you spent trying to sort the issue?

would it be more cost effective to just get a good used tailgate and bonnet and have them fitted? you have a good chance of a decent paint match with bits off a car from around the same year usually too.

Post some pics of that there rust so we can see what the fuss is about.

I have made 1 phone call and 1 trip to bodyshop. Obviously it's more cost effective to get Skoda to repair it and I've already looked for another tailgate in aqua blue with no luck so at the minimum it's going to cost £90 for a tailgate and £150 - 200 to get it resprayed

is that aqua blue? It’s a funny colour to decipher in pics as it’s very silver.

an octavia will come up in the right colour, means cutting your costs right down regards repair.

i just think you’ll be at a loss trying your luck with Skoda now, but it’d be great for everyone including yourself if you proved me wrong 😃

Had exactly the same rust issue on my 2010 estate around the number plate lights.  Took to local dealer, inspected by body shop manager, photos taken, checked all tailgate with his paint thickness tester to make sure but had not been repaired or painted before (which it hadn't) , took into workshop to remove lights and take more photos. Came back 20 mins later, said report would be sent to Skoda but he was pretty sure the whole tail gate would be replaced under the 10 year into corrosion warrenty.

I called the about 2/3 weeks later, body shop manager confirmed full replacement under warrenty. Booked in, courtesy car provided, all done in about 5 weeks from start to finish. Happy.

Exactly the same issue to mine but definitely not the same outcome. Need to know who to write to next now to try and get this resolved

Some photos attached. Sent a long message to Skoda customer services today. Let's see what they have to say

Wrong wording

Yes same place as mine but I would say your corrosion is more advanced.

Good luck with your complaint.

I brought a 2010 Estate back in 2015 and it was used - it had rust but not as bad as that and it was on the seam where above the numberplate.  I got a bodyshop to sort it and it was fine 2 years later when I sold it.

Was this repaired under warranty ?

No, got the dealership to do it as part of deal buying the car (it was a 5 year old car at the time with 70k and full history.

You are supposed to report corrosion as soon as you notice it.

The rust is quite severe and looks advanced. It must have been visible for a couple of years at least?

I bought the car 6 weeks ago. Did not notice it when I bought it but did 2 days later.

I supposedly have a Skoda customer services Manager phoning me in the next 48 hours to discuss. Hopefully they will agree to rectify it. There was nothing highlighted on the service records done by Skoda main dealers

Ah, I think that probably makes life a little more difficult. I'm just putting myself in Skoda's shoes, and whilst I rarely support their decisions, had I been presented with rust as advanced as that I too might be inclined to think the claimant had missed their opportunity.

Either way, dig in and be persistent. I had a successful body warranty claim on an 8 year old Superb...

So what was the outcome of your third bout of rust Silver1011? You never updated your post linked above. I'm curious to know.

I've updated the thread linked above.
