195/65R15 Tyres

Featured Replies

On the Swedish configurator, there is an option for a spare 195/65R15 tyre mounted to a steel rim 6Jx15 ET35.

This is good news, as it means you can use four of these tyres instead of expensive 16", 17", 18" tyres, etc.

Michelin summer tyres in the 195/65R15 size cost around £57.

Michelin summer tyres in the 215/45R18 size cost around £136.

So the 18" ones are more than twice the price of the 15" ones. Not only that, but more mpg with narrower 15" tyres and a lot more comfort due to the much higher sidewalls.

Can you do that safely then? Because the 15" spare is on a 15" rim whereas you are suggesting putting a 15" tyre on a larger diameter rim if I understand correctly?

Just buy 3 more space saver tyres/wheels with the bright yellow stickers on them then.

Now running our Arona (which is of course similar to Kamiq) on 16 inch with winter tyres, ride is much better and quieter than the 18 inch wheels it came with.

Standard are Pirelli P7 summer 215/45 R18 93V

which turns out to be an expensive size, and very limited in all seasons

Fitted Borbet Y rims with the new Goodyear Ultragrip 9+ 205/60 R16 92H

first impressions are very good, took a bit of a punt as no reviews available (only launched in June), but supposed to be improved version of Ultragrip 9 which gets good reviews.

Whilst not a Kamiq, I know the SE-L spec gets these same 18inch wheels

You just plain can not fit a 15" tyre on an 18" rim. If you want a tyre fitter to laugh at you...

18" wheels look good in the showroom, but out on the road the hard ride soon becomes apparent.

205/60R16 tyres are a great choice and much cheaper than the 18" tyres.

According to wheel-size.com the standard rim specification for these 205/60R16 tyres is 6Jx16 ET45 5x100 57.1

Alcar 6955 6Jx16 ET45 5x100 57.1

As per above, unless you buy a lesser model then you have the extra expense of an additional 4 alloys not to mention a potential insurance premium because you've altered the car from standard spec. The next owner will probably be unhappy to see 16" rims on the higher grade car so presumably you'd have to store the originals too?

So when you say 16" tyres are much cheaper...  factually correct but not in practice.

Whilst 16 inch tyres are cheaper, still cheaper than 18 inch all season tyres

The reality is apart from Vredestein Quatrac 5 and Maxxis tyres, going to struggle to put all seasons on the 18 inch wheels, due to rare tyre size.

The Vredesteins were coming up £155-170 each so looking at about £650

I ordered Borbet Y rims and high spec tyres, Goodyear Ultragrip 9+ for about eur800 (£680 at the time).  Could have had cheap winter tyres and basic rims for about £500, so was cheaper than fitting all season tyres.

I swapped them at home using the emergency wheel jack, took about 40 minutes, would have been much quicker with trolley jack.  But should be able to get to about 60,000 miles (5-6 years) before I need any replacements, with the seasonal swaps.

Just replacing the OEM tyres is about £130 each, so still going to be spending £500+ on tyres by 60,000 miles.  Quite simply the 215/45 R18 are expensive tyres.
