Terrible start to ownership

Featured Replies

I had been looking forward to picking up my Kamiq, and this morning (Saturday) I drove down to pick up my Race Blue SE automatic Kamiq.

The dealership had been very accommodating in arranging extra bits being added from the accessories list at the last moment. Drove it home using the sport mode on the gearbox which made a huge difference to the performance. Pulled into the local ASDA to fill up, put the fuel in, turned the key in the ignition and nothing!!!

It simply didn’t engage the engine start process. Problem was I was blocking the petrol pumps on a Saturday morning and the queue for the pumps just got bigger and bigger. I tried everything turning off the ignition and starting again, locking the car then unlocking it and trying the ignition but nothing happened! by this time I was getting some really ****ed off looks from people queueing for the pumps.

I called the dealership who rushed out to me and plugged in their laptop, after about 20 minutes they got it started but said they’d like to take it back to the dealership.

They called me after an hour or so to say it was ok. Drove down to the dealership to pick it up but once again the car refused to start. Red faced they apologised and offered me a courtesy car, until they can get it sorted on Monday.

I can’t say enough about how helpful the dealership (Allams of Epsom) have been BUT the car not working is a huge disappointment and I now have a worry that this example is lemon full of gremlins!

Very disappointing for you.  Let's hope they sort it to your satisfaction and soon.

On a separate note, wouldn't it be better taking it easy for the first few hundred miles by avoiding the sport mode, which in my experience can stay far too long in a lower gear and keeps the revs too high? Used to be called "running in" and most manufacturers still recommend it in one form or another.

My advise would be to reject the car a.s.a.p. for the reason you state - "I now have to worry that this example is lemon full of gremlins".

It's a brand new model, I'd be left with the feeling I was paying good money to be Skoda's guinea pig if I were to accept it.

thanks for the sympathetic comments.

as for the sport mode when you get out of town the autobox keeps the revs way too low in standard mode and isn’t keen to kick down. I didn’t push the revs high but the engine doesn’t perform very well at 1500-2000 rpm, at 3500-4000 the performance is much more healthy.

It was only a short uphill half mile stretch that I tried it out and yet to go anywhere near the redline.

rejecting the car is very much at the forefront of my mind right now

It’s probably just a faulty or miss aligned starter inhibit switch on the brake pedal or DSG in park position switch, and easily sorted, hardly worth rejecting for.

What accessories have the dealer fitted for you i.e what have they been fiddling with?

Accessories were all cosmetic floor mats, sill and bumper protector, pedal covers.

In the auto start up in park there is a light on the dash telling you to press the brake pedal. Goes out when you push the brake pedal but clearly something doesn’t get the message elsewhere so yes probably a failed sensor.

would love not to have to reject it but need to be reassured it’s not a lemon.

Just been reading elsewhere someone had issues with their brand new SEAT. They gave the dealership the benefit of the doubt and problem was fixed. Several months later, exact same problem.

If it wasn't something crucial to the running of the car then yes I agree with you, but if the problem is such that it leaves you stranded, the garage say they've fixed it and the car still doesn't start? I'd certainly be rejecting it.

What was the outcome of the starting problem?

All as a result of a faulty wire connector that was replaced (eventually).

The local dealer had to deal with the factory before replacing the faulty wire. They gave me a Scala as a courtesy car for the four days.

Car fixed and no issues.

I have to say it's a brilliant car so impressed with everything it does. Ride, handling, grip and tech are all superb. But also sooooo quiet and comfortable when cruising. In stark contrast to the Up GTI I had before.

Super! What engine do you have? How is the ride? In comparation with Yeti which is hard ....with bumpers at every deviaton of the street.

See my other thread that has a review on my  1.0 petrol Kamiq SE (DSG)

Hey man, that must've really sucked, and I'm sorry you had such a negative experience with a new car, did they ever find out what the root cause was on why that car wouldn't start?

Edit: Faulty wire connector, got it!
