Possible premature clutch wear on Fabia TSI

Featured Replies

I have a 2017  Fabia TSI   SEL estate 110. I have only had it for three weeks. It has covered 18300 miles from new. I noticed today that  the clutch pedal was at the same level as the brake pedal and this rang alarm bells with me.  When  I traded in my 2013   Mark Two Fabia estate earlier this month it had done just over 32000 miles and the clutch pedal was definitely higher than the brake pedal. That car had had brake fluid changes at 3 years and 5 years. I wasnt able to check the fluid level today as it was getting dark but I will tomorrow and I think it may well be low as well as being old fluid. The car has been serviced, April 2019 but the brake fluid wasnt changed, its the same fluid that was there from new, June 2017.

Am I right in what I am thinking about the brake pedal always needing to be higher than the brake? That is what I have been told by various garages over the years  irrespective of car model, if the clutch relies on fluid to operate the clutch pedal should always be higher than the brake pedal and if it isnt then the clutch is well on the way to wearing out. it I have told the Skoda garage where I bought the car and have asked for it to be checked by their workshop. If I am correct I do not think topping up the fluid will remove the premature wear or am I wrong about that?  The clutch will not last as long as it should have done in that case? Maybe the previous owner rode the clutch, drove in traffic a lot?

I hope I am wrong but clutches are expensive items after all and I welcome advice from the Briskodia fraternity.

              Thanks in advance.

I’m confused by your hypothesis. Does the clutch use the same reservoir for fluid as brakes in the Fabia? Is it the height of the brake pedal that’s different or the clutch pedal? What other evidence is there of premature wear on the clutch?  Do you mean the bite point is lower or the pedal itself is physically lower?

You’re comparing a mk2 Fabia to a mk3 and also overlooking other variables eg are the brakes more worn on one over another?

edit: did you test drive any other mk3 Fabia or can sit in other to compare?

I have just checked my 16 plate, the pedals are the same level. The level of the pedals is not affected by either clutch wear or brake wear.

Benz 3ne, Its the actual height of the clutch pedal, it is at the same height as the brake pedal. No other evidence of premature tyre wear. Clutch works smoothly. No discernible bite point.

Peter 3197. Thats good news, Sounds like I have got this wrong.  Thanks to both of you for responding so quickly.

Very welcome and just to confirm my brake and clutch pedals are at the same height too.

Maybe the mechanics meant how high the bite point is on the clutch, which can be an indicator? iirc it often sits higher when the clutch is worn. Some cars have a self adjusting clutch though (no idea if the fabia self adjusts) so it's harder to tell. Unless it's slipping, it'll be hard to gauge without removing it to check which is rather labour intensive. On some cars the clutch pedal height is actually adjustable too on the pedal box.

I'm no mechanic though, just watch a lot of car stuff 😁
