Service Schedule

Featured Replies

My car is currently on a long life service schedule and is not due it’s next service until June 2021.

The 2nd MOT will be due in March 2021 as I had this carried out free by the selling dealership as they offered it as part of the sale.

I didn’t want to make a long return trip for an MOT and to highlight any potential issues whilst still under warranty I was happy for them to do this early.

Would people advise on going back to an annual service when the time comes?
I’ll most likely get the next service done in March when the MOT is due.

The car was registered in June 2017 and only has 11,000 miles on the clock.

Having said all of the above, the service indicator in the car says it’s due in June as this wasn’t reset correctly at its last service. Struggling to find a local dealership who will reset this though as they didn’t do the original service and this don’t want to be liable for it.

MOT was done in March not Feb.

They are right not to reset a service interval without doing a service.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/480237-oil-service-reset

I would be getting an oil and filter service in June and get the service indicator reset.

Maybe at a VW Independent.

What servicing was done in June 2019, or before that?   As it is the car was looked at at the MOT in February, but that does not mean much.

The service carried out in June 2019, according to the paperwork, consisted of an Inspection with Oil Change (flexible) with additional work listed as Dust and Pollen Filter. This was carried out at nearly 8000 miles.

The car has been on a flexible service since new as prior to this the record only shows the Delivery Inspection.

Ideally I’d like to keep the Service and MOT aligned.

That's dependant on your circumstances. How far is your typical journey? Is it around town ( or rather does it involve much stop/start driving ) or is it on A roads / motorways ( where the car is run at a constant speed ) ? What's your driving style? Sunday driver or do you like to rev your car? And how long do you intend to keep the car?

My car was registered July 2017, I subscribe to long-life and it's just coming up to 12k. It's hardly ever driven in stop/start traffic, I mostly drive with 'economy' on my mind, I don't think the engine as spun over 3000rpm in it's life and most journeys are typically over at least 20 miles.  Our 2nd car however is used exclusively around town. The last one was on the long-life program but I had an indi garage change oil / filter after 12mths. ( simply because only one SEAT dealer would provide an oil service and their quote was astronomical ). that car was replaced by a Karoq and I'd have done the same if it were not for the £159 servicing package that came with it. At the moment it's on fixed intervals.

hope that helps.

@CookieMonster87

I would want the MOT early to get a 13 month MOT.

So the low mileage car never got much done on flexible servicing.

A service at 2 years old.

Look at the Air & Pollen filter and see if nice and clean / fresh.

I’ll take a look later on today.

Next MOT is now due March 2021. So was going to bring the service forward from June 2021 to fall in line.

@Scot5 I do about 300 miles a week, mainly motorway driving.

I’m partial to Sport mode now and again when I get on the twisty B roads but mainly it’s in Normal for the commute.

Sounds like the car was serviced properly. They'd have replaced the pollen filter if it under went a variable service at a franchised Skoda ( or any VAG ) dealership. Besides it shouldn't be dirty at only 8000 miles, well not unless the car had been driven thru Dundee 🤣

@Scot5

Yes sounds like it went on a Flexible / variable service schedule and passed 2 years from the PDI / Registration and had the service in June 2019.

So ready for sale.

Sound by the record that the Pollen filter was changed and oil and filter.

So over 3 year old, worth looking at the Air Filter just incase nobody else did.

I would say sitting behind busses in Edinburgh can cause the need to change pollen and air filter more often.

8,000 miles driven is no indication of how long a car sits in city / gridlock traffic as anyone that uses the common sense they were born with might realise.

PS

I do not live or drive in Dundee as it happens, just pass through occasionally.

I have every confidence it was serviced correctly as the previous owners worked for Skoda, one being the Master Technician.

All work carried out by the dealership that sold the car originally.

@CookieMonster87

So was it a Demonstrator from March to June 2017, 3 months / 3,000 miles, so 2 former keepers?

Odd how those with all the gear, training so more than an idea set the Service Indicator wrongly, and then the salesperson gets it wrong because they say on flexible servicing.  Pity they never look and check.

You could give them a call and ask since you are not travelling to them for a service in June as per the Servive Indicator are they happy to pay another Main Dealer to do an Oil & Filter Service.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot the previous owner and their partner worked for Skoda and owned the car from new.

Apologies I didn’t relay that very well.

Yes I did raise the point about it not being reset which they apologised for. I paid to have 2 services carried out as part of the Approved Used scheme Skoda were running.

It’s not enough of an inconvenience to start trying to claims free service.

@CookieMonster87   Thanks for clearing that up.

?

So does that service plan allow for 2 services 24 months apart (Major Services as they were called.)  & you do not need to be on Fixed Servicing so one Minor / interim

and on Major service?

  So each at 372 days / 9,400 miles or sooner.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot I believe it only covers the inspection and oil change aspect of any service. Anything else that is required will be at an additional cost.

@Scot5 just taken a look at the air filter and it is very clean.

Service indicator states (bare in mind this is a fixed indication and not the flexible indication the car is actually on);

Inspection in 16300 mi or 21 days

Oil change service in 5700 mi or 21 days

Edited by CookieMonster87

I am getting confused here, it was registered March 2017 (so presumably out of warranty).   MOT expires 10 months time March 2021

How did it end up with fixed date of June for servicing, was the first and only service done 3 months late (ie at 27 months).    I think you now need to request an inspection but not full service (just the items that are age related at 3 years). This should allow inspection to be reset.  (If a dealer says no, ask them why they can’t reset inspection indicator after an inspection - should be interesting answer).

As for combining MOT and service into one visit, lot of logic, especially if dealerships are not very close.

@SurreyJohn in the first post I stated the car was registered in June 2017.

It was serviced again in June 2019.

I bought it in March 2020 when it had it’s first MOT before collection for 3 reasons; 1 to pick up any issues before warranty ran out, 2 because it was free from said dealer and 3 because I didn’t want to make the long journey to that dealership in June just for an MOT.

I think I will get the next service done in March 2021 on a fixed schedule to bring it inline with the MOT, annoying that I couldn’t have kept it to June but it wasn’t practical.

Out of interest how dark does the “flexible” or long life oil look in comparison to the oil used on a fixed schedule?

It's the same oil according to the manual - VW 507 00. My dealer uses Shell Helix Ultra Pro 0W30 which is VW 504-00 and VW 507-00 compatible. Had it both when it was wrongly down for a long life service and correctly on a fixed schedule service

  • Author

I ask as my oil after 7k miles (and almost 12 months since it’s last flexible service) looks fairly dark, I was expecting it to have more of an amber hue to it.

Also looks a little on the high side. Took the reading after a 20 min trip out, left to cool for 5 mins and stood on a flat surface.

It looks where it should be when checked at 'Normal Operating temperature' as you have done.  In Area A.

(Check it when stone cold and see where it is showing.)

A TDI's VW507 (5w 30 FS III usually) Oil can be dark in only a few miles after an oil and filter change.

Below is what i had at 19,000 plus miles on Flexible Servicing and unable to get the Motability car in for it's service.

That was after over 2 litres of oil added over that miles.

Actually like clotted by the time it did get the Oil & Filter done.

Looked black as the ace of spades by the time i had driven it for 20 miles after the service.

(Car is for Sale at Arnold Clark, they bought it at BCA,

3 1/2 year old now & i would not touch it with a barge pole, i know how it was driven...)

Know what was advisories on the MOT @ 2 months before 3 years old and know that work was not done.

@CookieMonster87 this is what mine looks like after 7 months and about 6000 miles

oil.thumb.jpg.ca1673a1c3475c3701cd87a8b12973b8.jpg

@tunedude  Is that a new car with factory oil after 7 months / about 6,000 miles with VW509 so 0w 20 FS IV,

or a car that was serviced / oil and filter change 7 months / about 6,000 miles ago?

@tunedude are you on a fixed or variable service plan?

1 minute ago, CookieMonster87 said:

I'm on a fixed one now because they messed it up in the first place. I'm more a cautious 'change the oil every year whether it needs it or not' kinda guy. The oil has always been the same.

They said my mileage is on the border of either but for the sake of an extra few quid, sooner get them to do it each year. The first time it went in for a service, they said it doesn't need the oil changing and didn't understand me reasoning for wanting it doing. That's when they took me off Q16 variable and and put me on Q14  10k miles fixed.

@CookieMonster87

20,000 - 7,000 = 13,000 miles.

If it was on Fixed from new a Service / Oil change would be due @ 9,400 miles.

Sometimes a Demonstrator / Ex management car might get an oil change early and then go on fixed which might mean another due at 13,000-14,000 miles.
