Anyone have recent experience of EBC discs/pads?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I drove a 306 Gti6 some time ago and ran Redstuff pads with Turbogroove discs all round for about 3 or 4 years until I stopped driving it in about 2008. In my opinion, they were incredible. I can't comment on dust, wear rates etc, I was just interested in stopping quickly. They were fine when cold, but when they were warmed up, they were fantastic and would take endless abuse without a hint of fading.

Having spoken to friend recently, and done some reading, the reputation of EBC is either not what it was, or at the very least suffered a 'blip'.

I have a 1.4TSi Sport which fulfils the roles of second family car, and a bit of entertainment when I'm driving alone. The brakes are ok, but don't give me the confidence that I'd like.

My friend suggested Ferodo DS2500 pads but their website suggests they are not for normal road use.

Does anyone have recent experience of Redstuff pads (or other EBC products) on an Octavia 3? I know there's at least one other thread on brake recommendations here, but I was hoping for some more specific feedback.

Many thanks.

Hi S, i used Ds2500 on my other car for about 8yrs, worked well from cold, which was my biggest concern. Only drawback was brake dust.

Heres a photo of my Turbo Grooved with Yellowstuff pads, I'm very tough on brakes so, these have been replaced now. They were a good upgrade in terms of stopping power but, they are dusty, might be better just running Redstuff as they are a low dust compound

Thanks!

Has the brake fluid been changed recently as that might be part of the issue. The standard brakes should be more than upto the job of stopping the car.

Had red stuff pads on Octavia brakes on my old Fabia and I too was really impressed with not just their performance but also how little dust they produced.
that was around five years ago or so, potentially before the ‘blip’ you mentioned so I can’t comment of more recent experience.

I too feel the standard brakes on the vRS aren’t up to the standard I require so was considering a swap to red stuff pads and a fluid upgrade.

let us know how you get on with the red stuff pads

Not had any experience with EBC on my Octavia, but on my old i20, the greenstuffs made a noticeable improvement when used on track. Can't say I saw any fade and they performed from the start. Can't really compare that and an Octavia, I know, due to the significant weight difference.

You can get greenstuff for the Octavia, but as a few people have said, redstuff would be better. My mate has a 325i (slightly fiddled for the occasional trackday) and has yellowstuffs but does comment about there being a little less braking when the brakes are cold / on colder days. I've driven the car and can't say I notice, but he's had it with stock pads so will be able to see the difference. They are r90 rated so they must be up to the job on a day to day basis.

A lot of people to say about the dust, but I can't say I saw any difference.

I've got Greenstuff pads, front and rear on EBC discs, dimpled and grooved 312mm on the front, on my remapped Yeti 150 TDI.  I previously ran the same combination for several years on my Mk5 Golf GT Sport 170 TDI.  I sold the Golf today and driving it before it went, I was impressed by the good initial bite from the brakes.  For some reason, the Yeti isn't like that and it feels like the pads need to warm up before they work properly.  There can only be about a  years difference between the age of the pads and discs as the Golf had a brake job last year and I upgraded the Yeti brakes in February of this year.

EBC have always recommended Greenstuff pads for road use on cars up to 200 bhp.

I liked the redstuff and personally wouldn’t run green on a heavier car.

yellow are a bit better than red in stopping power, but dusty, whereas the red were low dust and a good feel/stopping power.

Obviously there are other factors and limits too, not just pads.
