Oil grade ? - Petrol

Featured Replies

So, I have now reserved a Kodiaq, exciting

Unless the service record shows its been done recently, it will probably be getting a service where i work before i take collection

I have looked on a parts catalogue we use, put my vehicle in, and its suggesting numerous different oil grades, can anyone tell me the correct one ?

It will be getting serviced every year and is a 1.4 petrol

Comma website says "If you are unsure which product to choose then Prolife 5W30 will be suitable in all cases."

Castrol site gives 5w30 LL Edge

ive seen 0w20 mentioned a few times on here though so thought id ask

I have just topped my 1.5tsi up and the oil provided by the garage was Castrol edge professional ow-20 specifically the version that says compliant with vw508. I have been led to believe this is the oil being used when on the short service interval programme as it’s better for emissions. With no vw or similar dealer near I got it from amazon as it’s a bit of a sod to find. Hopefully somebody who knows for definite will respond

New 1.5 TSI come with the sump filled with VW 508spec oil. It appears normal for dealers to fill with VW 507 5W/ 30 oil at first service.

The 1.4 TSI will be VW 507 5W/30 spec oil.

Be aware that no Comma oils are VW approved.

id likely go with the Castrol anyway, but on the Comma site, the 5w30 it lists says it is approved ?

Official approvals:

Approved under VW standard 504 00 and VW standard 507 00

Must have been “ approved “ recently. VW spec approved lists are hard to find this is the most recent I’ve ever seen and Comma is not on it.

In the past Comma oil containers just used to state “ recommend by Comma for VW 504/507 applications “.

VW 504.00/507.00 are the figures you should be searaching on the oil can.

I understand the correct oil for the 1.4 TSI engine in the UK actually is VW 508 00 as detailed in the Kodiaq Maintenance Workshop Manual, which is available to download here -

In certain other countries elsewhere in the world as detailed in the Manual, the correct oil is VW 504 00.

Pages 56-58 thereof detail the following:

So, pretty confusing lol

Actually, that listing above says 508 or 504 for QI6 servicing, long life intervals, which i wont be following, QI1-4 are fixed and can seemingly use 502 spec, I think the 504 will be the one I end up going for

So if the car comes with ow_20 (508) and dealer then services it with 15w-30 (504) and the top up oil supplied in the boot is 0w-20 then wouldn’t  you expect the dealer to tell you? As 15w is a lot thicker isn’t it

5w30 not 15, don't think anything has used 15 for 20 years

But even 5w30 is a jump from 0w20, which must be like water

Oops sorry yes misread as 15.

so effectively mixing the 0w and the 5w on a short service plan doesn’t really make a diffence.

..... and yes bluey  green water and definitely more expensive than 504

  • 2 weeks later...

My 1.4 TSI left the factory with VW508.00 0W20.

At both the first and second service the dealer has used VW507.00 5W30.
