Sounds like the light switch might be faulty then. 

You will need to have an auto sparks or someone that knows about cars to look at it if you can not.

Yes you should be able to turn off the head lamps and side lights. or just the sidelights with the engine running, but then the DRL's will be on / stay on.  (Daytime / Daylight running lights, front only)

Maybe you are confusing daytime running lights with headlights? Just a thought as they are very  bright.

Most of them are under the steering wheel, atleast on EU models.
