Have done 1000miles since last service  when having stopped found the spanner Service sign come on . Never had that happen before so rang My local service who said the fitter could not have done it. They rectified it  so what do they do ?.

It's just an electronic reminder that counts distance/time on fixed service schedules and other parameters on extended service schedules.  It needs reset electronically at each service so the car can keep track.
