21" Alloy Tyre Sizes on model 60 and 80 are different?

Featured Replies

Why on the model 80 are the tyres different sizes front and rear, but on the 60 they are both the same? Audi also do this.

235/45 r21 Front and 255/40 r21 rear on 80

235/45 r21 Front and 235/45 r21 rear on 60

Honda do staggered wheels / tyres on the more powerful Honda-e (150ps) & BMW do it with the i3.

'Very Sporty' rear wheel drives.   Not just RWD's.

Some think it looks better & grips better, but wrong wider tyres in the wrong weather conditions might not be.

The VW ID.4 also does this on the 82kWh / 150ps models.

The Enyaq 60 has a less powerful motor so less likely to generate wheel slip (and possibly as a result less powerful regen?), so does not need as much grip generating. I think the wider rears are to counteract the more powerful motor. As roottoot points out, that might not be a good thing in the wrong conditions. I'll be wary of regen in any snow I encounter. Plus side for narrower tyres on a 60, less rolling resistance and so higher economy. :)

As the others have said, its will be down to it needing more grip for something. Be it to put down more power, take out more power (regen) or generally for more grip (bigger battery and more weight need more grip). Was made more trendy I believe by Porsche with their heavy engines in the rear needing significantly wider tyres out back. Many other (mainly RWD) cars are the same. My old Nissan 350z and 370z both had staggered tyres and had different amounts of stagger depending on the alloys spec'd with the car (bigger stagger on the racier Nismo wheels).

Electric motors have very high torque so require special strengthened tyres

Non standard and expensive

The standard (Summer) tyres on 80 and 80X are

front 235/50 R20 100T/EU  rear 255/45 R20 101T/EU

The optional 21 inch

front 235/45 R21 100T/EU  rear 255/40 R21 102T/EU

T rating is 118mph

and with seal inside, expect to pay about £250-300 per tyre
