Front coil springs skoda fabia

Featured Replies

Hello one of my front coil springs broken at the top. So I'm looking to replace both front ones the same time.

I'm looking to find decent coil springs which will last not the cheap rubbish that's out there poor metal. So I'm looking for brand makes and any reviews people have got from there own.

Skoda fabia 1.4 tdi

Thanks

Lesjofors or Kilen, both from the same factory in Sweden.

Fitted many a set and they have all been fit and forget.

Does your Fabia MK1 1.4TDI 70HP have air conditioning?

The air conditioning adds a little front end weight, so some brands recommend slightly longer (uncompressed length) and/or stiffer front springs.

Can you see the coloured dots/marks on one or both of the front springs, as that will identify the OEM part number of your current front springs?

As you can see in the chart below, 1 red dot and 2 yellow dots is 6Q0411105AH. 1 red dot and 3 yellow dots is 6Q0411105AJ. 1 red dot and 4 yellow dots is 6Q0411105AK.

I would probably go with the KYB RH2727. They are available on ebay for under £15 each if buying two and using the 20% off code.

You can think of Kilen as like Nokia, ie. made in Sweden, and KYB as like Samsung, ie. made in South Korea.

One benefit of KYB, is that they usually give the specifications of their springs such as length, wire thickness, weight, etc. whereas Kilen don't. Another benefit is that KYB are often cheaper on ebay than Kilen.

Fitted Kilen ones to mine and been OK up to now. I don't think there's much between them tbh.

Strongly advise fitting new top mounts and bearings too, especially the bearings.

Strut top nuts can be removed/replaced with a 22mm spark plug socket that has the nut flats at the top. You can then get an allen key/bit down the top of the plug socket whilst using a spanner on the flats.

For a little extra I'd replace the lot, rears are so easy to fit, last time I did one I just put an Eibach set on it, top quality springs, 25mm lower, much improved roadholding, I seem to remember it was about a hundred for all four although that was a few years ago now, well worth replacing the front shocks at the same time.

Having done a few over the years on my 3 Fabias, I would also recommend at least buying the top bearings {as opposed to the top mounts) which you may find fall apart when the springs are removed from strut - this stops the replacement process. Top mount on left, actual bearing on right - a top mount will not necessarily come with a bearing. Also ensure you fit the spring the correct way up. I used a ring spanner on the strut top nut and found that it is easier to slacken off when strut on car, car on wheels - just undoing a 1/4 turn.

I found out that the hard way!

Fit new top mounts and bearings. The old ones will be smashed flat. Car "may" be a lot quieter on tyre noise from doing that. Though all four corners need doing for best results.

The car does have aircon.

Also make sure you swop out the bump stops while doing this as will guarantee they are perished as sep said above and as I did replace the lot while its stripped down.

The front new coil springs I went for Lesjofors. I also replaced the top mounts and bearings.

The old springs must have gone weak over time lower to the arches .

The car sits much higher now from the arch bigger gap new springs. I can see a big difference in the handling now to.

Took a few hundred miles for mine to settle in and sit right but I did do the whole lot I guess shocks as well.
