Safety Hammer Mounting advice

Featured Replies

So, I bought an AA brand safety hammer as it was cheap and you never know when I might have to get out of the car pronto. Where's the easiest way place to mount it? It comes with two screws but I don't see a place where I can easily screw in the mounting plate. So far it is in the driver's side glove box on it's own as it is within reach there without me having to mess around trying to find it.

I screwed them to the B pillar, low down.

Checked behind, didn't see anything the screws could damage.

You want to get to it while seated and belted in.

Drivers door pocket.    Velcro or Rubber band mounted if you are going to be driving into a canal or river and attempting to escape or just going to crash and be locked in the car.

Or even if getting out and going to smash someone else's glass.

Or under the drivers mat,

I dont think the last suggestion is very sensible, no way could you reach it while belted, even if you dont have a beer belly the steering wheel would prevent you from bending down to reach it, if you were in your canal or river scenario it would be underwater, OK you could probably feel it but it would likely interfere with the controls, in a roll over its likely to brain you!

The latter I inflicted on a female passenger in a Suzuki SJ410 with a Mini flywheel puller set  Worse still it was her vehicle

@J.R.  Obviously if you can not reach under the mat under where your seat slider is then do not put it there.  (If you are a short hand typist, or is that armed?)

Feet for dancing, brain for thinking.

Sit in the car, with aforementioned hammer in hand and then see where you need it to get to it, then have it secured where you can reach it.

Car mats do not extend under the seat runners.

@J.R.   Really.    It is like people do not have cars and need telling what they have.

Mine do, that is how they are fitted, cut to slide under a bit to protect the carpet.

My hammer is in the elastic of the Holder on the Sun visor were my cards for starting chargers is.

It has been there for decades on 4x4,s or under the drivers rubber mat under the seat.

But that might not be what suits you.

Not about me, I am not the one asking where to keep a hammer in the car.

In my workshop wherever I am I am no more than 2 paces from a selection of hammers, much duplication going on, you can never have too many. I'm unlikely to ever need one to break out of the place in an emergency but you never know!!!

Did you need to drill any holes to do this? Would prefer somewhere that already has the holes for it rather than creating new ones.

Yup, but they are only a couple of mm.

I'm not going to remove them, so won't have holes left on show.

Next owner, well that's up to them. I'd leave them if it was me.

But I get your point. I did consider sticking them, but there wasn't really any backing to the holder.

Seems you already have it in the best place.  In an accident things can get thrown all over the place especially if the car rolls.  I'd leave it in there.

Thanks for the update the advice, folks. I will leave it in the glove box for now but will keep what you all said in mind for later.

There's a safety vest holder/pocket under the driver seat - velcro it to the underside of that?

Mine and SWMBO's are the new type - firing-pin one end, seatbelt cutter the other - the mounting bracket baseplate is self adhesive and I stuck ours on the RHS of the instrument binnacle.

Considering that as I got some heavy duty velcro strips somewhere.
Long story short trying to avoid drilling new holes anywhere. I don't trust myself to not break something critical.
