How many revs is best for cruising

Featured Replies

I tend to change gear early in my fabia TDi 100bhp. This means I seldom get above 3k revs as this equals 84mph in 5th. I try to keep in the band 1500 - 2500 revs. Is this good for the engine or should I use higher revs say keeping between 2000 and 3000.

Is there any benefit in using BP Ultimate diesel?

Cheers Gibbo:confused:

In my view BP ultimate diesel is overpriced and overhyped. The shell diesel extra is much better priced and makes my car smoother than other brands. As for your driving technique, I think it would be a good idea to excercise the engine a little more. Take the revs up to 3500-4000 now and again. You won't damage the engine, in fact it will run better and more smoothly.

my car is happy to cruise at 1000 revs.... 40mph in 6th.. (vRS) but only cruise, if you want acceleration keep the revs up above 2000, and as craig says, the odd blat is good for it ;)

Keep the revs around 1900-2000 for economy (60-65mph in 5th) and above 2100 to ensure you have the best acceleration you need. If your engine is well bedded in you only need to change around 3000-3500 to maintain 2100+ revs. in the next gear.

BP Ultimate Diesel is bloody fantastic in my view. Really optimises the performance in my car, but i suppose it varys from car to car! I love it :D

Your car is NOT happy when cruising at 1000 revs. I'm tired of saying that but i really feel sorry for the car when i see someone do that. You will destroy your turbo, clog intake and abuse engine internals if you keep driving like that.

I thought 'Cruising' was doing 'burn - outs' in a supermarket car park. In whivh case you need a lot of throttle!!

Yeah, definately. I used BP Ultimate PETROL in my car a couple of weeks back and it's not as good.

No Chris, that's CROOZIN, get with the program dude !

Your driving technique is fine - more revs = more stress on the engine.

As mentioned don't baby it all the time though - the odd blat will do it good.

Someone on TDICLUB recommended when accelerating to not change until >3500 RPM as that fully exercises the turbo's VNT vanes. It doesn't mean you have to cane it, just methodically accelerate in say 3rd gear.

I was gunna say...this is labouring the engine or very close to and isn't good for it.

I would personally not bother with BP Ultimate and use more of the available rev range :D

Chris

I've been trying mine reecently and it's definately happier above about 1750rpm when cruising. This means I tend to stay in 3rd when driving about town. I swear the box on mine is longer than 84mph at 3k in 5th?

 Sorry Sir!!

I always spell it like this Sir! My Mum says that people what dont spell proper aint been brung up right!!

  • 6 months later...

Id assume 100rpm over idle and driving it in 6th isnt the best if however just pootling aroun with very light throttle pressure then I see no issue at all.

Look at the 535d & 335d they have 90% of torque at idle and IIRC the torque is 420lbf....yum.

In a car like these two you only really need 1 very long gear - like all fully electric cars. "Plenty of power".

7 months for the next post.

Old posts seem much better than the crap thats been posted recently though there is gold back there I tell you.

What like your pointless Golf power results thread in the fabia section?

Well come on think outside of the box.... the 2.0TDI PD 140 engine is very likely to be used as the vRS in the Fabia in future so if you know the performance of the Golf then the vRS Fabia will be a little quicker.

This is in effect a VAG forum engine performance is equal accross the VAG group. In fact many people here seem to have Golf TDI's in their user names I guess having moved on from the vRS at some point.

So they joined a Skoda site after getting rid of the Skodas then? I think you'll find they moved TO Skodas for the naming theory to hold water...

I'm of the same mind as you: 1500/2500 rpm. However, I started a new thread yesterday which I think might be of interest to you. Some of the guys are predicting dire consequences for the "dual mass flywheel": I've no knowledge of such a thing - by practising our style of driving.

you will be alright cruising at that sort of revs , but i'm sure your thread mentions the fact you use full throttle to accelerate from those revs in a high gear

I find it best to cruise between 1500 and 2000 rpm. However if driving up hill you need to keep the revs above 2000rpm to avoid labouring the engine.

Whoever said more revs = more engine stress is talking rubbish. There's nothing worse than driving around at 1000rpm.
