Copper grease wheel nut bolts?

Featured Replies

Is it worth putting copper grease on each wheel nut bolt before putting them on the car to ensure they won't cold freeze/get stuck in the future & if so should I apply it thinly or generously?

Thanks, Chris.

I always wipe a bit of Castrol LM grease on them. Never done any harm and they never come loose........ But no doubt someone here is just about to tell me why its a bad thing to do.

Copper grease on the hub face is also a good idea to stop the wheel sticking.

I don't see a problem with greasing the wheel bolts as long as you regularly check they are correctly torqued up.

if you do use grease then use it sparingly!!

and also dont bother greasing the hubs if you have steel wheels

only copper grease the thread of the bolts , not the taper . If you lube the taper you may end up with over torqued wheel bolts due to the lubrication on the taper , i've seen it happen on a vehicle which was checked by the RAC after a service , RAC said the nuts/bolts were too tight but they had been torqued correctly but with grease on the taper

Its a good plan- makes life of that wet and windy november evening better.

as said though-make sure its only on the thread

:iagree:

i remember driving on the road from newcastle-emlyn to carmarthen once and i drove over a roofing nail in the road on a freekin cold pi$$y wet night, in a place where there's no signal on the mobile, and i couldn't undo the wheel nuts.

I've done it on all my cars, makes everything so much easier!
