K&N vs pipercross vs green air filter

Featured Replies

Im looking for a high performance air filter, have always used K&N in the past & they have caked the MAF.

Im aware the MAF is prone to failure on VAG's & I dont want to contaminate it, so what filter is best.

Those of you using K&N how does your MAF look.

Thanks in advance.

im interested too, only between the k&n and green as pipercross dont do one for mine yet (which would be my choice) i beleive green are better but too would be interested in other peoples views.

We talking Panel filter or induction kits here?

I find my Pipercross Panel to be alright (vRS TDi)

I've got the Pipercross panel filter and I'd recommend it. I have checked the MAF and no greasy build up.

Gives a more noticable induction sound to standard filter.

Pipercross here as well

Pipercross here as well. Slightly better induction noise and looks good quality.

Not tried any other filters tho..

Pipercross panel in my 1.9TDi 4x4 has certainly helped...

pipercross in my vRS

Evoms will soon take its place tho

Thanks guys. looks like a pipercross.

Thanks guys. looks like a pipercross.

I did get a power/torque increase over book figures in my vRS TDi with my pipercross fitted...

Worth investing in a K&N 57i Induction Kit (for any 2.0L TDI Octy, not just vRS)

I checked out loads of info before I bought and decided that a cotton filter (as opposed to foam) gives the best filtration with least risk of oil contamination of MAF and increased 'breathability' is pretty much the same all round.

Pretty simple to fit and a bit of DIY gives me ram fed cold air through the OE intake (U shaped ducting) and shielding keeps hot engine air and water/spray from underneath away.

Here's the result;-

OctaviavRS040.jpg

Put it to the test at the JKM RR day yesterday (was also running with V-Power and Millers DieselSport4, as I always do) and got 189.3bhp max. :D;)

Well chuffed with this on a 'bang for buck basis.

Must say Bahnstormer that BHP gain was impressive - wonder what the V-Power and Millers element was?

Still testing my pipercross, seems to feel a little bit more open after 4500rpm (my brother in law was trying to keep up with an S4 today...)

Hard to say without separate tests; but I'd guess plus 10-12bhp for the K&N and plus 5-8bhp for the V-Power/Millers.

Compared to djgritt's vRS I had no increase in max torque so also guess that the principal benefit of the induction kit is better breathing at higher rpm; it also give a good throaty roar on full throttle with a fair bit of whooshing and hissing at lower rpm/throttle openings.

Now in my vRS. :D Thanks buddy!

I notice the filter is very clean, and also very dry - do these not get oiled??

Looks the right filter and the price is reasonable, but I suspect AwesomeSarah on here can better it ;)

Chris

just fitted pipercross panel filter today and first impressions are good

Seems like the correct one. The Golf V 2.0L TDI and Octy 2.0L TDI use the same filter in the K&N range so ought to be the same from Pipercross.

Awesome GTI's price, in their on-line shop, is currently £28+VAT= £32.90 plus P&P.

Be supportive and give them a call.

hi bahnstormer,

What were your findings of cotton vs foam? I've had a bad experience with K&N & I have found info to back that up. I'm interested to know what you based your decision on.

Cheers

Its quite some time now since I looked into this, but I have found this on K&Ns website that gives persuasive argument to the 'pleated cotton' filter (read with a small pinch of salt for bias) - K&N Air Filter Facts You Should Know

and this thread from the official Nissan Skyline GT-R forum (I trust these guys know what they are talking about), which I found somehow; the first page is the most relevant - Air Induction, one more time. - GT-R Register - Official Nissan Skyline and GTR Owners Club forum

What I was most impressed with was the filtration abilities of K&Ns (and other cotton filters) as opposed to foam filters, which may allow more air through but at the expense of filtration.

OK?

Aye, cheers for that...

I have read the K&N facts in the past & I'm not convinced! Perhaps I'm biased, but my rover died of hgf shortly after fitting a K&N - and it was at low milage so wasn't really due.

I like this website / page Tuning the LET - Intake I don't like the fact that you can see through K&N filters! If you read that page it leads you on to the porsche forum with the following thread: Re: NO K&N NEVER on a 944 NEVER - The Porsche 944, 924, and 968 Forum As such I'm using HKS on my other car, which is quite expensive as they don't last very long, but I have more faith in foam. ITG would be my choice as they like K&N also supply many race teams. ITG Air Filters

Cheers Ewan

As it happens I used an ITG filter on my Fabia a few years ago, and I have an ITG filter in my wife's Doblo that they were kind enough to custom make for me (both OEM replacements). My present K&N is an induction kit (as shown in earlier posts); although based on my reasearch I wanted to get an Apexi filter but they weren't available.
