Today I finally Fixed my fabia

Featured Replies

Right heres the symtoms,

  • Lumpy idle,
  • Not very smooth acceleration,
  • Poor fuel economy,
  • When reved to 2400rpm in neutral the revs rise and fall rapidly almost as though you could feel the turbo spooling then not spooling.

Took the car back to the dealers about 4 months ago and they said they couldnt find anything. idiots!, it got worse and i took it back. They claimed it was normal turbo operation. But unforunatly didnt have a "normal" VRS they could show me.

I fell out with the dealer and told them i would fix it myself.

Spending most of my days off checking the usual things like boost pipes and small vac pipes.

I even thought it was the egr at one point.

But since fitting the boost guage i have been able to see that the boost pressure was spiking very rapidly under part throttle on.

Last night the intercooler boost pipe popped off so i was fiddling again as usual most of today.

Looking at the engine I finally came to the conclusion that having checked everything else it must be what ever controls the vacumn system........ ie the vac distribution block.

I had always suspected something adrift with this unit but never had enough courage to swap it, as they are £120 from the dealers.

Well Today I swapped it, and OMG its a different car. It doesnt idle rough, it doesnt jerk at low rpms it doesnt boost on and off........ its ace!

heres the offending part

Feel well chuffed now. :finger: Lightcliffe halifax :P

Amazing how much trouble a black plastic box can cause. Glad you sorted it bud.

Glad to hear you managed to sort it out.

Lightcliffe are now a Nisan dealer so they are probably not that bothered :(

Thanks, yer its bugged the hell out of me for months, to the point of me wanting to fire the damn thing :D I feel so much better now. :)

Cheers Len

I wont be buying a nissan anytime soon then, especially not from those clowns.

Hey Skud.

Jabbasport thought that was the problem with my 07 Plate vRS, and it blowing three turbos. They took her for a rag with Vagcom and there was some nasty boost spikes. Sadly they did not have a a spare box to verify it was that - but they did say they have had loads and loads of vRS's with boost issues and the root cause is almost always that vacuum box.

I want to get it done under warrenty but all I have to prove the problem is the VagCom boost readings from Jabba - and thats hardly going to look very good. So as its a dead easy component to replace I am also rather tempted to do it soon.

At the moment I am not booting it in 2nd and 3rd gears as thats where I am getting spikes - so I am currently driving around the problem to avoid having to have a 4th turbo. But it is a problem and it does need to be fixed.

Needs fixing? ^^

Too bloody right!

I wouldnt worry about using jabbas readouts, afterall they are a forced induction specialist so will and do know more about these engines than the dealers do.

Mine was doing it in warrenty but its now out of warrenty. I could ring SUK up and see if they would do anything regarding reimbursement........ But they are clowns and would probably just make me angry, resulting in a rant on here :D

Yeh your spot on there I guess, its just what they have actually given me is a set of sheets with Excel Graphs on them, with the revs along the bottom and the boost in bar along the side. Then a line showing what boost the ECU is requesting and what boost the Turbo is actually supplying. So supplied vs actual.

The problem is it might be asking for more boost then it should do when if left the factory, if you know what I mean. ;) Which to a knowledge Skoda Technician would indicate that maybe my car has been maybe been molestered. So they definitly won't do it under warrenty then as the Vacuum Controller could easily be seen as an effected component.

Is it difficult to repair as opposed to replace? Be interesting to do an autopsy on the failed part - may be a simple fix that could save other owners some hard-earned....

I think they are sealed to death Baz, Sir. :(

Great minds think alike ;)

heres the unit with top smashed off, The unit is very well reinfoced, and it took some effort to pop the top off. I am Affraid it broke off rather than came off :(

Heres the pic,

More to come

Heres a thought if the car is under warantee:

Suggest the dealer changes the part, if it does not fix the problem you pay if it does they do.

simple pressure test to see if there's a leak - airhose and soapy water followed by a little hacksaw action would do 'er, Be interesting to see if there's a jammed valve in there or what exactly...

Still - really glad to hear that you've sorted a longtime pain of a problem and are enjoying the car again...

Well its as solid as a rock,

I made a mess too,

With all the insulation striped out you can see the valves.

Next step, band saw :D

Wow - I admire the effort!

(Are you silently swearing under your breath as you dissect it? lol!)

Well i took the angle grinder to it and now its just a mess

I can confirm the inside is full of loads of tiny servos, and abit of a circuit board.

Its definatly a replaced item not a repaired item

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Well at least now that niggling question is answered for all time...

Cheers
