Well the day has finally arrived. The Accountancy firm I work for is shutting down its IT department in the UK, all the IT staff are to be made redundant and the work moved to India. Can't name the company until I actually get the chop, non-disclosure etc etc.

We've got til the end of the year - leaving date is non-negotiable, if we leave before our official leaving date we won't get a penny, business as usual til we tell you to clear your desk and **** off.

If I don't find something else before December, I'm doing a City&Guilds Electrical installation + Part P and going into business with a mate.

Although I think I'm pretty handy at doing my own building work/decorating etc, it's always been more cost effective for me to pay someone to do bigger jobs.

I've had a bit of a wake up call last couple of weeks though, was going to get a loft conversion done, priced up the job, materials all in I reckon 12-13 grand. Get some plans done, get a few builders round, coming back with quotes of around about 19 grand +Vat. It's a 5-6 week job. Since when did builders want a grand a week for their time?

Whilst we are on the subject, the house is full of woodchip, so need 3 rooms plus stairs and landing stripping. Asked 3 decorators, none of them want to do it for £500 in their hand, then asked a girl who is still at college learning to be a painter and decorator to do it, she won't do it for £350 for a weeks work cash in hand because it's not enough. Am doing it all myself now, just going to take longer is all.

Am I so out of touch with reality????? Is £500 a week really the going rate for a painter and decorator and a grand a week for a decent builder?

Hi I let my Freedom membership lapse some time ago by the look of things....so I bought it again yesterday, got the receipt from paypal.

AFAIK from searching on here the membership should update immediately, but so far I can't see protected areas or post adverts etc. Is there some kind of automatic process that needs to be switched back on?
