I know it's an old topic but just saw something in What Car which may resolve once and for all whether you save fuel when coasting to a stop.
Apparently the auto box (presumably DSG) in the Audi Q3:
"includes an 'Efficiency' mode which lets an S-tronic Q3 freewheel when you decelerate, saving fuel."

They must have done the maths - so presumably freewheel coasting really does save more fuel than you lose by fuelling the engine ticking over. -

Bit of a come-down to have them pulling freight though, but wish I lived near enough to hear the awesome sounds they make. -
