In Topic: vRS vs Lesser Skoda's

I had a Mk I Octavia vRS for 5 years until last July.
I loved her but in that time I picked up 3 speeding tickets, and at 125,000+ miles the old girl was starting to need serious money spent on her (cambelt, rear disks & pads, clutch showing signs of starting to slip)
Also SWMBO hated the ride and moaned about it being toooooo hard.
I do about 20,000 miles p.a. and the fuel consumption was getting a bit expensive.
I only took her in to the dealers to check out the coil pack replacement scheme, and whilst waiting spotted a newish but high mileage Superb for a decent price on the forecourt. Got the keys, took a drive and SWMBO swore it was the best car ever. After haggling got it for £1,000 less than asking, plus various bits sorted out.
I've worked out that in the last 6 months I've saved around £500 over the running costs of the vRS and for longish M'way cruising the Superb is much more comfortable and relaxing.
I still miss the vRS though. I'd have a Mk II tomorrow if one came at the right price (and I could have it de-badged before SWMBO saw it :giggle: -

They are called "Entry Lights"
They come on after the car is unlocked or when a front door is opened, and go off after about 30 secs.
They are supposed to light up the area around the door, but to be honest imho they are a fairly useless gimmick, even in unlit areas at night.
Much more useful is the "Driveway Light" function (I think it has a different VAG name but that's what SWMBO calls it)
Get home in the dark, turn off headlights, take key out and flash the headlights. Once the front door is opened the dipped beam lights up and switches off again after about another 30 secs. after the door is closed and locked. Very useful for getting the front door key in. -

I suspect that this will be treated in exactly the same way that all similar types of health, safety, motoring etc. laws and regulations are enforced in France.
Namely, the locals will ignore it, the Police will ignore the locals ignoring it, and concentrate on clobbering foreign tourists and visitors. -

chicken_eyebrow, on 17 January 2012 - 09:22, said:Mike - from people I know that have done the speed awareness courses in the past, the cost of the course, plus getting there, taking time off work etc means you're about £150-£200 out of pocket so might be worth thinking about whether that's worse than the £60 and however much your insurance will go up with 3 points. Your insurer could probably give you a ballpark figure?
I was caught speeding in Thames Valley are last year (35 in a 30) and was offered the Speed Awareness Course option or the £60 / 3 points. As I had 6 points already I opted for the course.
Having spoken to the organising body (the AA iirc)discovered that it can be taken anywhere that it is offered, and only has to be taken within (again iirc)26 weeks of the NIP offer letter. As I live 60 - 70 miles from the nearest Thames Valley centre I arranged to take it locally.
Booked a days Holiday, paid £72 for the course and drove 3 miles to the nearest centre.
So, for the additional cost of £12 I saved 3 points and had a pretty interesting afternoon.
Before making a decision you do need to check out the available locations, costs etc. -

Always if I'm on my own
Never if I've got a passenger / SWMBO who wants to chat
I regularly (once a month) am a passenger with 2 other mates driven a fourth mate who constantly has 5 Live on, droning carp away in the background. Does our heads in, but he wont take the hint.
