My dear late mother (bless her) would insist the first words to be uttered on the first day of the month were "Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits" but only of there was an "r" in the month. It was supposed to be bring good luck - although she could never explain why. -

I am not a plumber; but have you considered moving the hot water cylinder into the loft? I did this many years ago.
There are obvious disadvantages to this arrangement e.g. risk of frozen pipes if the house is left unoccupied and unheated during the winter.
However, you would still be able to heat water electrically if the boiler fails and you would not need to put in a combi boiler. In addition, I found that the arrangement created enough head of water to feed a shower from the hot water tank, so I did not have to install an electric shower. HTH -
