| anyone offer any help to me please, got an issue with stupid lumpy idle and it does feel like either the traction control is kicking in in 2nd causing the car to feel slightly jerky or with it off the tyres are struggling to grip, but i suspect its actually caused by poor air/fuel mix....and ive tried all the normal fixes to no avail, being a bit of a geek it really gets on my wick that it does it, especially as its not reading any fault code so the garage i got it from wont fix it without it reading a fault. anyway....was wondering if anyone could meet me or at the next meet possibly let me swap MAFs to see if its whats causing the problem, takes 2 seconds to whip off and swap,(literally if you have an induction kit) and it would be of great help, id hate to fork out for a new one and it not fix the problem, i can also assure you your maf will be fine.i only want to test it on mine at tickover. |

| yup, with half a tin of halfords electrical contact cleaner. if anything this has made it slightly worse or not improved atall, lol. (and yes i left it to dry etc) also have tried resetting the throttle body but neither worked. Last edited by duke of hazzard; 13-11-2006 at 15:04. |

| TBH I'm amazed you dont have any fault codes. Your symptoms are usualy down to fault coil packs, MAF sensor, boost hose leaks or a vacuum hose leak. Most of these would give you fault codes relating to rich/lean running on one/all cylinders or a 17705 error for boost related leaks. |

| i was a bit surprised myself but he did it infront of me and the little blue laptop thing he had said "no fault" or something along those lines, cant remember exact wording. only other thing i can point the finger at,(not that i would until i knew the facts) the first sign of this was on my way home after having it remapped and the dump valve fitted at awesome, is there a chance the map/slack jubilee clip could be responsible? is still like to swap a maf before i looked at anything else as a cause as the problem is only slight, im talking about a 150rpm wave on the needle at idle. under acceleration the car only seems lumpy when im not using anymore than half the pedal, using anymore makes it feel smooth enough. thats whats making me lean towards thinking its a sensor problem and not a leak as id of thought a leak would be noticable throughout the full range of throttle. |

| If the problem coincides with a remap then I'd give Awesome a call. It could be that a sensor/pipe was border line OK before the map and it has now been pushed a little too far. Having said that, part throttle hesitation can be an issue on custom maps but usually the mapper will spot and solve this on the day. A loose hose/boost leak around the DV *would* give a 17705 fault code. |

| Just a thought ... what fuel are you using? And does it do it even after you have refilled the tank? I only suggest this because mine behaves in a similar fashion when using 95 RON 'cheap' petrol. |

| hmm, have always used tesco 95ron petrol, both before and after the map so i dunno if its just brought the problem on slowly, but when i took it for a test drive it was on the same fuel and it was fine. i had a generic map put on it so i dont know it thats means it could still be applicable? when i had it rolling roaded at the awesomegti meet the graph was lumpy as feck then too, loads of little spikes and troughs as opposed to a smooth curve.. im stupid really, should of mentioned it then when i was there, it had gotten slightly worse recently which has prompted me to post this, i could handle it at idle but the "rough" acceleration is really twisting my nips! if i find a donor maf ill try it and see what comes of that, if it doesnt fix it ill ring awesome. |

| a few people suffer with the idling problem me included it comes and goes like just now it was fine this morning i was getting the "missed beat" thing happening and mine's difficult to drive very slowly which sounds like your problem sorry i can't help more with maf as i live in cardiff but i woukld keep chek in the octy section to see if any has sloved the problem |

| So long as it is a 1.8T DBW. I'd be looking for one from an Elegance, 4x4 or VRS and NOT an SLX or pre-facelift model. MK4 Golf GTi or non-quattro, single tail pipe TT will be fine too. |

| Hi Mate I have never been a fan of cleaning the MAF I believe if it is faulty , cleaning it will only delay the inevitable..... Lumpy tickover is usually a sign of the throttle body needing cleaning , but then there are pipes that could do with checking over and also the N75 valve....not really something that would come up with on a diagnostic check. It could possibly be worth popping it in for us to check on. Jim is the one who does the rolling road , it was him who put it on for you , but he became a daddy and he is off work just now , but if he comes in today I will have a word with him and ask the question for you.
