Boost gauge on a diesel

Hi everyone

I NEED HELP!!!!

I`m looking to put a boost gauge on my Audi TDi but I don`t know where to start is there a guide to follow or has anyone done this and can give me detailed advice or had it done professionally who they could recommend.

Is there a particular gauge to get electrical/mechanical either psi/bar and what rating does it include pipework etc or is this a seperate purchase and where to put the pipework and routing etc.

The reason is I had an Alfa diesel hire car on holiday which had a gauge fitted and it kind of got me thinking about identifying future problems

Thanks

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

The boost gauge for a diesel is a little harder to fit than a petrol version. There is no real point on the car where you can take a t pieced feed, so you have to drill into the intake pipe, post turbo.

Also diesels don't generate a vacuum so you only need a gauge that reads positive pressure, and one that reads up to about 25 psi... as again, diesel run higher boost than petrol

Hope this helps

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

Most boost gauges for diesels come with a kit where you can tap into the intercooler pipework. Mine taps off a custom feed on an EGR replacing pipe. Before that it was simply a hole drilled in the inlet manifold, and a bolt screwed into it with a nipple on it that the boost pipe attached to.

Make sure you get a gauge with a decent range, as a 1 bar petrol one will soon be exceeded. Try to find a 2 bar gauge at least.

Boost gauge on a Diesel...

^^All of what they said.
+ don't get one that shows negative boost (i.e. manifold depression) as diesels aren't supposed to do it. Ideally you want one that starts at 0 (atmo) and rises to at least 2 bar.

PS: I haven't got one

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

cheers for the advice

Is it a simple halfrauds job to get a diesel gauge kit or is it a specialist company that do the kit and can anyone recommend one they have used.

Thanks

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

There are loads of gauges to choose from. What you need to sort out is where to tap in and what with.

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

Simple as possible IMO.

Go for a simple vacuum gauge if you can, though maybe it'll have some nice features built into it. More to the point, where are you going to site it? Can you get one with the correct fascia colouring and lighting? How much do you want to spend? etc...

Start looking on Demon Tweeks etc and maybe drop a line to the likes of Jabba, JBS, Awesome....

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

Hi Vindaloo

I`ve found a spot between the windscreen and the pillar but may need a pillar pod mount

The dashlights are white so hopefully not a to find one to match.

I found a site that sell gauge kits from £30 up which have a smoke face when not in use but they either come with a nipple to connect to the manifold somewhere or a t-piece to connect to a boost pipe but don`t know which to get any advice.

Hope this helps

Re: Boost gauge on a diesel

T-piece'd kits etc are for petrols. Unless you have a replacement EGR pipe ..... you wil NOT find a kit that will fit a VAG diesel, without have to drill a pipe.
