Good old traffic police - Ferrari envy

Went out for a nice spirited drive this evening, and while on the way home theres a dual carridge way uphill stretch right after a roundabout that people that has a overtaking lane for around 1/2 mile.

On the roundabout I spotted a ferrari coming onto the roundabout and tucked up behind him hoping he would do the same as most people and goto about 90mph and overtake all the slow cars, so that I could hear the car.

I quickly spotted a police car when we where both around 3/4 of the way up the hill so the copper must have been around 10 cars behind near the bottom of the hill, bearly visable. I must have goto around 70mph ( its a 60mph ) max and the Ferrari around 75mph. All of a sudden all the way back the cop car comes howling past and stops the Ferrari.

I turned round and the drive was getting into the backseat of the cop car, which locally means not 'look what you did, next time be more careful' but 'damn criminal, people like you should serve with pedo's' so he was a definate 3pointer.

First of all, how the Police car can accuratly say that this guy was going much over the 60mph from nearly 300m away with 10 cars infront of him, and he was alone is beyond belief, and the fact that a taxi and a shiny new 5 series where shifting well over 90mph in front of the Ferrari held no interest for the copper.

I do feel sorry for the guy in the Ferrari, the cars 10x more capable of any kind of speed than anything else on that dual carridge way, yet other people speeding away from him and he gets the 3 pointer for simply having a exotic car that the copper must have been well jelous of.

Re: Good old traffic police - Ferrari envy

It happens I'm afraid, but; They may have been observing his driving for a while and it could've been the first opportunity they had to pull him. They may have just fancied a look but then done him for his 'attitude' (lack of forelock tugging). Maybe he was actually driving it illegally? They like to think they can accurately calculate speed by timing between things like tarmac joints, lamp posts, cast shadows etc. but it is very open to operator error. I was once followed for 15miles on quietish NSL rural dual carriageways, passed by people doing 95+, but they had decided they were having me (best was 80ish). I'm sure they were just bored and wanted to chat about my car but I was late for work, I dared to frown, the smile went off his face and the book came out. A Happy New Year from Sussex Police (a long time ago).

We don't know the full story here. For all we know the Ferrari driver could have been driving like a kn*b for quite a while, before you came on the scene. It’s not unlikely as people who drive cars like that generally do like show off and drive like idiots. Not saying all of them, but quite a lot.

It just really bugs me when people see Police doing their job, without knowing all the details, give the Police flack.

The amount of Police bashing that goes on in the UK is absolutely disgusting. They do a fantastic job, and get nothing in return other than abuse from the public who have no idea what the Police do for them. Makes my blood boil. They are one of the best Police forces in the world, unfortunately people don't seem to realise that.

Ok i'm bias but....

You have a group of people who are out there to help people, 24 /7. If you have any sort of problem, call them and they will turn up and help you, no questions asked, and they dont even want to be thanked.

Most of the Police bashing that goes on, seems to assume that Police simply do things for a laugh, in reality its actually to HELP OTHER PEOPLE

Two recent examples, Forest gate raid, just for a laugh or because they honestly thought that there was a chance that lives could be saved by a raid?

Example two, the Daily Mail discussion about whether the 3000 police officers "caught" speeding in marked Police vehicles last year should be "let off" 3 points for each offence. In 99% of cases officers were "caught" speeding beacuse the public called and asked for urgent HELP. I wasnt speeding for a laugh it was

A Because im trained to do it

B Because I have a legal exemption

C Because someone dialed 999 and said there was a burglar in their house

"(sorry it took me so long to get here and they got away with your tv, but I didnt want to set off any Gatsos on the way here)"

Okay, sorry end of rant (give me my 90 points and i'll be on my way)

P.S. (Im not defending Traffic beacuse no one really likes them anyway!!)

Re: Good old traffic police - Ferrari envy

My experiences so far have been VERY mixed.

When someone drunk basically drove me off the road (witnesses there, numberplates written down) I went to report this. Basically the officer who took details said: 'well I've got to take your details but we won't bother following it up'. That made MY blood boil. Don't get me started.

Similarly for a house burglary - police showed up after 2 hours. My father in law drove down & back to his house with my then girlfriend without once exceeding the speed limit in a third of that time. In this situation I will say that as there was no immediate danger I fully appreciate more urgent cases take priority though.

I've also seen some excellent policework both traffic and non-traffic related, and it IS a thankless job. I really dont think most officers etc are 'out to get you' and are generally very reasonable if you don't take the p*ss out of them. I wouldn't want to deal with drunk and abusive people causing grief every weekend, that's for sure.

Another one is that when the police DOES their job, the justice system following it will protect the criminal more then the victim of a crime (ex. burglarly where someone gets clubbered over the head, you'd get done for GBH probably). Must be very frustrating.

Speeding is a perfect example. You exceed the speed limit, you take your chances. If you exceed it exceedingly, your chances of getting caught are increased. If your car stands out, ditto. A Ferrari does stand out a little, so it's more likely to get noticed. It's one of the biggest advantages of having a pretty tame-looking Fabia vRS

To end on a (hopefully) lighter note - what kinda Ferrari was it

Re: Good old traffic police - Ferrari envy

It's often the 'systems' and excessive political and managerial interference that give the police a bad name/frustrate the public.
About six months ago I saw a car being thrashed around the local streets (windows smashed out etc. ), was then abandoned and I saw the driver picked up by another vehicle. I had the reg. and good descriptions. After my call had been screened, prioritised, etc. transferred 2/3 times I gave up having been on the phone for over 15minutes (costing me money). A few weeks ago I was visiting my old mum and one of those door to door sales gang kids comes to the BACK door pretending to be deaf and dumb. The front door is much easier to access but has a security camera. Try to phone local nick to get him checked out, same experience as above but I held on this time. The police car turned up quickly once I had managed to file a report, but by then well over 40mins elapsed and he was long gone. Sure enough, next neighbourhood watch newsletter is full of walk in/distraction/OAP con type crimes.
