alternative iPod connection!

I decided I wanted to use my iPod in the car, but I've gone a slightly different route.

I decided to change the head unit to an Alpine, which allows connection of a line in. This needs an additional lead, but it's only £20.

The head unit was £180, the lead £20 and a facia adaptor was £15. The line in phono connections sit in the cubby hole below the radio. I'm also using a 12v car charger, which has a separate line out connection, from the bottom of the iPod. This avoids the signal being passed through the iPod's headphone amplifier, which means the sound is a little more crisp.

The other advantage is that the Alpine head unit sounds a fair bit better than the Skoda one! In addition, traffic news now appears to work properly, which it didn't do before.

I agree with the advantages of taking the ipod's output from the bottom, but given the slightly odd location of the lighter socket I'd be interested to see it all in action - any chance of a pic?

Ah, I'll try and sort one out later!

I've actually run an extension socket to the underside of the dash, near the driver's left foot. This also gives an extra socket, so I can use satnav at the same time.

Has anyone got the Denison ICE:LINK set up? Was just wondering how well it worked, and what the sound quality was like.

I looked at it, but decided to go for a different head unit instead. The price difference wasn't that great.

I presume you went for an AI net Alpine unit ? If so why didn't you buy the proper Ipod controller box from Alpine ?

I know the system you're talking about, but it costs about £400. I haven't got an AI unit: it's just a head unit that can control a CD changer, but with a different lead that enables an alternative line in. This works out at about £200 all-in.

I saw the other system demonstrated, but it looked too confusing to use whilst driving. I just set my iPod to random anyway, so I don't need the head unit to display track details.
