This bloody hard!!

In the end i had to take the glove box out, then i couldn't get all the wires in because the head unit was so deep it was hitting some big black plastic thing behind.......out comes the supper hot butter knife and cut that crap out. Managed to get it all back together after as well so now it looks nice again

It's all fitted nice now ready for GTI international this weekend.

Pictures arn't the best as it was getting dark towards the end.

Thanks to Si.......i can see why you sold it now!

Nick

Try fitting a head unit to a Mk5 Astra. You've to take out the glove box, the trims above the glove box, the whole facia including heater controls, and the trim right back to the hand-brake.

It's a good 4 hour job to replace the head unit, and that's with 2 people who know what they're doing.

Well the glove box wasn't bad, just a few screws.....but the butchering of the inside with a hot knife thing was like surgery lol, after cutting and melting the plastic it stank in the car. The stereo just would not go back in far enough, oh well. It's all done now ready for tomorrow

What bits of plastic are back there that can be chopped out?

The stereo in my OH's vRS mk1 is slightly proud as I couldn't get it all the way in.

If it is just a piece of plastic to remove I think I'll have a go at the weekend

Theres a vertical black plastic support beam that runs behind the standard headunit.
It's a real pain as it gets in the way when fitting new units with extra cables, or if the new unit is slightly longer.
When the headunit is out just take a look into the hole and you'll be able to see it at the back.

It can be cut out with a hacksaw or a hot butter knife.

Headunit is an AVH-P5700DVD

Glad you got it in Nick! Looks really good
