Infinity 6502i Retro-fit

Just a note of caution to any one considering fitting these speakers. I went to my local Halfords last night to get some Infinity 652i's as replacement for the stock-fronts (as recommended on here by a few folk) to be told that they are now discontinued and the 6502i's were the new model.

Took them at their word and purchased them, tried to fit but found the speaker magnet would not fit into the gap (side impact bar, I think, in the way) as it is larger than the stock speaker.

I'm no brain of Britain when it comes to these things but unless I'm missing something major, these speakers just won't fit so be careful. Any views/ opinions welcome.........

Cheers
Hugh

Shugz,

not actually seeing what you've experienced so difficult to comment but.......

......I wouldn't have thought the side impact bar would be that low? I'm assuming the the magnet actually fits in the cut out and it's just not going all the way in?

Anyway, there should be some sort of grey matting in the form of a cup (loose description) behind the speaker. Remove this and have a gander.

The depth of the 652i (02 model) is 53mm. If the 6502i is more than this then it's the wrong one. The diameters are both 16.5''.

Sorry can't be more help.
Cheers.
Adrian.

Did a bit more digging around and the 6502i has a mountung depth of 66mm; the 652.i has a mounting depth of 53mm.

The previously mentioned 652.5i is the Kappa series and is twice the amount (approx.) and has a mounting depth of 60mm.

Also the 6502i has 165mm diameter whilst the 652i were 160mm. I wonder if you really need the 6002i which is 160m diameter and a mounting depth of 58mm.

Cheers.

The Octavia does have particularly shallow mountings, and at 66mm depth I can believe
the 6502i is too deep!

The 5mm difference between the 6502 and 6002 is probably negligible as the mounting will
still fit a 17cm gap. The 6002 might fit as it's shallower - if not, looks like another speaker
manufacturer will be getting some Skoda business!

Many thanks for the advice Adrian/Rob, its a bit un-nerving when you are not really used to doing this sort of thing to be told that a part 'should' fit but then doesn't. I'll be going out to my local Halfords at lunchtime today to do battle to get them changed for another type or different manufacture (one that fits this time!).I'll keep you posted as to what I end up with and whether I'm happy with things etc.

Cheers

Hugh

I had a similar Halfords experience with my Impreza and front Infinitys - I asked them for advice and they said they would fit, but same problem.

This time around on the Octavia, I read the threads on here, but took the speaker housing etc with me and unboxed the new ones in the store to check.

I also bought the 'VAG' wiring adapter from Halfords to make two go into one but this didn't seem to fit the wiring connectors either, so I wired the 2 same wires together and used spade connectors instead.

That's about the limit of my technical knowledge, but I also found that cutting a horizontal flap in the plastic door membrane made an even bigger difference to sound depth .

Search on here for threads on both fitting and the 'Octavia Bass tip'

The 'bit of door' getting the way is the lower mounting area for the window guides. I ripped (not literally) the door skins off to find out what it was. I've got the same problem with my infinity's, cant remember the id code but cos they're components the magnets are bigger.

I thought about making the plastic mounting bigger but that would need a mod to the door skins which I'm not over the moon about doing. I'll probably get hold of some others and use these in the back instead.

I dunno if this site had been published before but these guys MCS-Direct wipe the floor with Halfords for prices and knowing what they are talking about. Give em a try

www.mcs-direct.co.uk

If you want satnav type stuff try

http://www.satnavigation.com/

They were, last time I looked, around £500 - £600 cheaper for the kenwood system I was looking at than anyone else!

Just got back from Halfords, told that the 652i's that I had originally asked for were exactly the same depth as the 6502i's (66mm) so can only presume they are talking rubbish or the people with the 652i's installed in their cars have a different door panel setup with nothing in the way of the larger speaker.I have now got a set of pioneers (can't remember which model, sorry!) but I wish I had read James' reply first, as I think I may have paid out far too much cash for them!

You'll need to mount them in the parcel shelf if you do - the
rear side-shelf standard ones are smaller (13cm).

Thanks for those links - the Garmin Streetpilot III for considerably
less then 1k...

Only reason I go to Halfords is that it's easier than waiting around
for mail order!

Hmm...when I took out my old speakers, all that was behind it
was a clear polythene "sheath" across the back of the aperture.
I know some vRS owners have reported having some kind of
foam type stuff behind their speakers, which might make the
difference. I suppose a workaround for this would be to get a
stack of washers and put them on the mounting screws so that
the speaker sits "non-flush" with the mounting points.
Getting the grille on afterwards might be a problem if you
do that though.

Are the Pioneers TS-1716 or something similar? I have the
1316 in the back, and they're pretty nice - certainly give a
good strong bass. Good luck with fitting, and let us know how
they sound!

I would hazard a guess and say they were TSE-1775's but don't quote me on that yet.Fitted them (with ease this time) and they seem to sound pretty good. I'll get a better listen to them on my way home tonight and let you all know, let's face it though they can't be any worse than the ones Skoda fitted??!!

The 90 quid ones? They look good on paper at least! And no, they couldn't sound any worse than
the Skoda ones...

That's right, although like I said previously, I should have read Nemtex_VRS' reply before I bought them as I may have saved a bit (means a lot to a Jock!)

Just to let every one know, I have now had the weekend with the Pioneers TSE-1775 fitted to the vRS and can say they are well worth a try especially if you are a dance music/ bass head type of guy/ gal.

Rob, all the stuff I've ordered from MCS has arrived either the next day or the day after that.

Oh and I have a StreetPilot 3 Lovely!

Exactly - next day or day after, rather than today!
Also, I don't like getting too many parcels delivered at work in case they think
they're paying me too much - which rules out the Streetpilot 3!

Just a note to update you all further, I have now also fitted Sony A1326's in the rear and have to say they sound pretty good too.I would recommend anyone hacked off with the standard Skoda fit hifi to consider a full speaker change before going down the route of buying new head units/ changers etc.

Many thanks to all that posted replies concerning the Infinity speakers I bought in the first instance.

Cheers

So that's about £130 on speaker upgrades? Seems like quite a bargain to me!

Which of the original tweeters have you removed/unplugged/stabbed with a rusty screwdriver
in frustration?

So, with the composites and standalones you now have 8 tweeter units?!
If you find the trebles a bit peaky still, I'd definitely recommend disconnecting
the rear door tweeter, makes a surprising difference...

Rob,

I wired the two set of cables together ala the front speakers so I can presume I now only have the tweeters actually on the replacement speakers and the 'Skoda' ones have now been disconnected.

cheers

Forgot to add, still very happy with everything done so far as I have now spent more time in the car and find the sound very clear and sharp compared with the original set up. Would dearly love to go the whole hog and chuck out the head unit and changer and go for an Alpine set up or similar but will leave that for a lottery win (i.e probably never!)

Cheers

If you've got all 4 wires connected then your tweeters will still be working, as the second set
of wires connects to the fitted tweeters. To disconnect the rears you just connect one of the
positive and negatives instead of both.

If you like the sound though, definitely don't bother...

That makes sense as I wasn't too sure before, I'll maybe leave disconnecting the tweeters for now as I'm quite happy with things as they stand. Maybe through time the treble will begin to grate but at the moment just being able to hear the music and pick out indiviual instruments instead of 'mush' is excellent and didn't think a relatively cheap mod would transform the sound so much.
