Insurance - for 18 year old...

Hi,

I currently have a 1998/99 Skoda Felicia GLXi 1.6 insured through Direct Line for £1,200 (last year it was £1,700 with a 97 1.3 GLXi !! ). I have 1 years no claims, no motor convictions etc. I plan on making a few modifications:

- New suspension (better handling etc)
- New wheels (15/16" alloys)
- Induction Kit
- Full exhaust system (at some point in the distant future )

I think I know what Direct Line is going to say!

What insurers would you guys recommend?? Are Adrian Flux any good? Or Chris Knott?

Cheers,

James

Direct Line might be OK - I went with more Than when first getting insured in my name, and they gave me a years NCB free. However, I had to ditch them when I started modifying.

Chris Knott is definitely worth a shout, and make sure you mention briskoda.net in the conversation - I did, and they have the forum on their system.

Yes, Direct Line will tell you to get stuffed with mods as will most insurance companies. To be insured and all mods declared at 18 is unusual, most companies are 21, some 25 before they let you mod.

Not sure on Chris Knott, so maybe thats you're best offer, but I'll think you'll struggle sadly.

Prove me wrong

Forget it, they won't even let you put alloy wheels on the car at your age. Just accept that untill you are older you will either have to accept your car basic or buy oe that has the features you want as standard.

Give the lad a break.

He has nothing to lose by asking them

This is true, but William makes a good point - mods + youth do not make for happy quotes.

Norwich Union Direct seem pretty competitive for young drivers (saved me about £800 over Direct Line's renewal quote), but they're not mod-friendly...

My young Brother-in-law (18) recently bought a Clio MTV and wanted to fit alloys to it. His insurance company said if he did he would have to cancel his policy. A phone around got him no where as far as alternative quotes. So I am afarid he had to make do with expensive alloy look alike metal wheel trims.

Have you tried increasing the excess on quotes? IMHO, it's better to pay out if you have an accident, rather than regardless of it - most online quotes systems will let you play about with increasing the excess, and there's ususally a point beyond which increasing it doesn't get you any more savings on the policy...

Yeah i can get it down to 1200 with an excess of £350, but to be honest i would rather pay the extra 100 for an excess of £150.

Insurance in the UK is a true shocker My friend lives in NZ and it costs nothing out there

Is it worth it? i'll decide next year before i start to do the mods...
