The magic smoke escaped

On the way to work this morning I was listening to a very bass heavy album at very high volumes.

I'd nearly arrived when I suddenly lost all bass. I turned off the stereo and when I got there I opened the boot to a burning smell.

Drifting out of the port on the subwoofer was the magic smoke that makes it work.

Time to go shopping tomorrow I think

Never toasted a sub before!

Re: The magic smoke escaped

Take it repair would likely be more pricey than a new one?

It's a 10" JBL sub in a proper JBL ported box.

I should just be able to drop in a new speaker so it shouldn't cost too much.

Re: The magic smoke escaped

depends if you can buy the speaker itself cheaper than the whole sub (i.e. the enclosure).

Might be pushed for luck though

Copper "wiring" and the like is actually tiny tiny pipes, through which magic smoke is passed to make lights flash and noises occur. As Dr Z says, when the system breaks, this smoke is released, hence it stops working.

And there ends today's physics lesson.

Re: The magic smoke escaped

There must be an underlying cause for the sub failure. Before spending money on a new speaker I would check everything over as it may happen again. The most likely cause is the amp clipping and not sending a clean signal to the speaker. The remedy for this is obvious, you need an amp that has a higher rating.

Nope , 800W amp driving a less powerful sub flat out on some very bass heavy tracks for 40 minutes.

speakers are non-servicable. When the voice coil goes, you're effectively buggered..get the credit card out!!

You could replace the driver but make sure you get a like for like replacement as the box is designed taking the characteristics of the speaker into account. The wrong driver may sound poo.

Re: The magic smoke escaped

Sounds like someone needs a JL 10w6 I meant 10w7.

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/prod...60ea0e24ea9403

800w (assume thats RMS? ) would certainately kill a JBL given some stick.

Savage Garden are OK anyway - Better than most R&B/rap rubbish out there.

Re: The magic smoke escaped

I thought the magic smoke came from the magic cigarette that the monkey was smoking that makes the noise in your sub, works the automatic choke, and the magic windows.

Nope , 800w peak I assume.
It's the third of MonkeyBoy's kenwood amps that you had two of.

As for the JL , I don't think I shall be spending quite that much.
