Hello, my first ever posting after the first day in my occy vrs (how pleased am i!!!), the only thing i dont like is the sound from the stereo cant frankly frank its ****e!! is it the speakers that are poor or the stereo, i have a panosonic mp3 stereo from my last car but the display is blue and would rather just get the current stereo sounding good, and if i was to fit my mp3 stereo what connectors do i need to also connect up the auto changer, any help is massively appreciated!!! You may not be able to use your autochanger with another headunit.

Usually all you will need is an aerial adapter and amplifier.

Pretty well covered on site.

Welcome Vinny,
I'd suggest you start with the "usual" speaker mods - disconnect the rear tweeters (too close to your ears - see here) and cut the plastic from behind the front woofers (to allow them to "breathe" - see here). These are free and effective mods - next would be to buy some decent speakers - plenty of advice on this forum. The OE ones are pretty dire.
Recommend you start with the front speakers - components are best (woofers are 16.5 cm in diameter but be careful with the depth).
If you change the head unit, as Lummox says, you need an adaptor to power the aerial's built-in amplifier (got mine from Car Audio Direct - see here).

Dont cut the plastic behind the speakers, not unless you like wet footwells.

As Lummox said... Don't cut holes in the door cards... trust me your car will leak like a sieve

Depends how much you want to improve your sound. I decided to upgrade my headunit to a MP3 based one (who needs a disc changer with 4-6 albums per disc?!) followed by fitting better components to the front (do a search.. loads of options) but make sure you get the fitting depth right as it is quite shallow. I went for some Alpine components that were a good price. The rear speakers are quite small and thus lack a little ooomph... You could either upgrade them, fit a stealth shelf with 6X9's or go for a sub... you pays yer money on that one.

Oh, and welcome to the site.

On my old vRS, I changed the speakers, and disconnected the rear tweaters and this improved the sound from the standard radio no end, although in the end I changed the HU and changer because I wanted DAB reception. The changer cannot be controlled by anything other than the oem unit.

As mentioned dont cut the membrane behind the speaker, its there to both protect the speaker and stop water entering the cabin through the speaker surround.

I cut away the bottom half of the cups behind the front door speakers, this protects the speakers, directs water away from the speaker hole, yet still allows the speakers to 'breathe,', no wet footwell (I think!)

True, but what I did was to cut an upside down 'T' in the plasic behind the speaker and use 2" wide water proof tape to tape the flaps making a "hood" thus stopping the water run into the car. Not too easy to discribe but hopefully you get my drift.
