Specifiying a second driver on insurance

One way that seems to help lower premiums is to add a person on as an additional driver. What info is needed to pass on? Do you need to know their no-claims? their driving liscence? or just their name an address?

Re: Specifiying a second driver on insurance

Depends on which company is quoting...usually it just seems to be name, number of years licence held, relationship to policy holder, any claims/losses/convictions in the past x number of years...

I'm not sure that adding some random person is going to help ... but if they are your other half, having a stable home life is meant to suggest you are a lower insurance risk etc.

Mums or Dads (or slightly older spouses) with clean driving records are good to add on if you are under 30, as this can reduce your premium a little bit in my experience. I would imagine if you are 17 or 18 this could make a difference of hundreds.

Try it next time you renew your insurance, get the quote, then phone them back and get another quote with you + 1 parent added to the policy.

Added my brother to my mondeo insurance, and the premium went up £35. The reduction seems to only apply to family who live at the same address.

It depends on the insurance company...when I was with Direct Line they charged me extra to put the missus on the insurance, when I moved to Norwich Union they actually knocked money off for having her on the policy. I know the company that insures my smart would add to the premium for every new driver though...

Re: Specifiying a second driver on insurance

I added my wife to my insurance (girlfriend at the time). I was 28 10yrs clean licence full no claims. She was 25, just passed her test on R plates. It brought my insurance down by £50-£100 At the time we weren't sharing a house or address.

She tried it the other way and it put her quote up by the same

Figure that.

I would recomend adding a female 25yrs+. Mum, sister, partner or just a friend.
