Firstly, welcome

As to what you are describing, sounds like a tuning box. A tad crude, but effective. More effective yet would be a generic remap or better yet a custom remap. One huge + point for the tuning box is that it is very, very easy to revert the car to standard ie for servicing or warranty work and it is undetectable with the box removed.

Welcome to the forums.

You have probably heard of tuning boxes that plug in. They are a good way of getting extra power and cost two to three hundred pounds for a decent one.
For the most gains you want a remap, this is when new software is uploaded to your cars ecu. Cost of this varies between three and five hundred depending on which tuner and software you go for.

Look at the top of the screen there is a search facility, do a search on tuning boxes and another search on remaps. You will get hours of reading on both subjects.

Cheers
Lee

Like someone else has already said, do a search first. There are lots of tuning boxes out there, some good, some not so good. In the end, you get what you pay for. Tuning boxes are more crude than a remap, but they have their advantages too.

If you were to rate them in order of how good they were, it would look like this:

Tuning box (analogue) Crude
Tuning Box (Digital)
Remap (Generic)
Remap (Custom) Most refined

The cost will reflect this, with an analogue tuning box starting from around £30 up to possibly £550 for a custom remap.

I'm happy with my analogue one. Best 30 quid I spent on the car Make sure you find out how chipping/tuning boxes will affect your insurance though as this might make your decision for you

Just be aware that the £30 resistor in a box analoge boxes will cause the engine management light to come on if your vRS is an 04 or later.
