hi... got an a/c issue

hi everyone, just joined the site after getting nowhere with the skoda dealers!!!

my air con has stooped working completely. went to skoda dealers who changed the compressor saying that i needed a new one!!! when i went to pick the car up they told me that on top of the compressor i also needed to have the system regassed!!! so i coughed up the cost for the compressor and refused the regass as i had that done about a month ago to no avail. so here i am out of pocket and still no air con!!!

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

vehicle is a fabia 1.9 sdi.

cheers

AJ

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

Errr if you do the compressor you have to have a regas as the gas will be taken out before the compressor can be removed.

Bit like changing a tyre and not pumping it up.

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

as above, don't run it empty as the gas lubricates the system else you'll have a brand new knackered aircon compressor.

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

The oil lubricates the system, the gas carries the oil around

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

You can't run it empty. The system contains a pressure sensor and the clutch on the ac pump will not engage if system pressure is low.

You should have paid for the regas, although you may have a case that they didn't tell you about this work or get your approval. EG you asked them to fit an ac pump, rather than fix your ac, and then it's your choice to take it elsewhere for regassing (obviously fitting a pump like said fitting a tyre, won't make it work till it's pumped up).

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

My 2ps:

The Fabia AC compressor is a wobble-plate design, so it doesn't have a clutch - it just runs at minimal compression when 'off'. The regas will therefore definitely be required ASAP, whether you get them to do it, or get a DIY kit from Halfrauds or wherever.

Once you have it regassed, give it a whirl, and hopefully it'll all be OK. However, if it seems to work only when the car's first started, then it'll be the evaporator temperature sensor. The dealer ought to have picked this up with a diagnostic check if it was part or all of the original problem, however as they are obliged to do the job the 'proper' way (taking the whole dash out) for a fixed price set by Skoda UK, they may not to like having to do it so may possibly have not bothered with a diag check. There is, however, a simpler DIY method developed by some of the folks on here that I put into a pictorial here.

Hope this helps!

When my Fabia's air con packed up it was the Evaporator Temp Sensor and I've seen quite a few other people with the same problem. Assuming your new compressor and regas don't fix the problem, find someone local with VAG-COM to read the fault codes off the car to see if anything's been logged

EDIT: Damn you Mr Ap0gee

Re: hi... got an a/c issue

still think not paying for the regas was a very bad move. its like buying a tyre from the garage and refusing to pay for the valve and driving off with a new tyre thats flat, you'll knacker it in no time.
