new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem Hello people, just found this website, having owned my '51 Octavia vRS for 3 years now. I have had a lot of problems with the engine management light coming on, and have had it checked by a local garage a few times now, and the light reset, but they are no experts in diagnostics, and didn't really know what to suggest other than taking it to a local specialist, who will no-doubt charge a fortune to analyse it, and even more to supposedly fix it, but me being a tight git, I don't want to fork out a ridiculous amount of money on what could be an easy fix. The problem occurs at low revs/tickover, usually after decelerating, and results in the engine being hesitant to pull away. However, once the revs build above about 2000, it pulls fine, and both performance and fuel consumption are then normal. After being reset, the engine management light usually takes a few days to come on. Recently, the problem has been compounded by an intermittent hissing sound coming from below the inlet manifold, and the engine running really rough on tickover/low revs. This generally lasts for a few seconds/minute before clearing itself. The main engine fault code that appears (for any techies oUt there) is :- 17705 TURBO/THROTTLE VALVE CONNECTION PRESSURE LOSS. But other fault codes have been present too. The air mass meter was changed about 2 1/2 years ago under warranty. Has anyone had any similar problems, or can suggest a cheap/simple fix ???? HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem Cheers, stu...wasn't aware that it was such a common problem, but having read the above threads, I can see that it is, and that I am not alone. Had the fault codes cleared this afternoon, and he also reset the throttle body to the factory default spec (??), and it ran fine on the way home, but I have just put it away in the garage, and it is spluttering again, so I will purchase and fit a new pipe and see if that cures it !!!!! Cheers buddy !

Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem Check for hissing noises under the inlet manifold at idle. Quite often one of the vacuum pipes inder there splits and will open up under boost and log that fault. Easily missed as well.

Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem M-03...hissing noise only comes intermittently, and then goes off, so I don't think it is a split pipe. It sounds like a valve is sticking somewhere, which then opens up and cures the problem. It usually occurs when starting up if the engine has been run recently i.e. when warm, but only lasts a few seconds.

Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem AAAAARGH !!!!!!! Got underneath and took the old one off and it has already been replaced with the new part no. !!!!!!! (06A 145 790 C) There was a small quantity of OIL in there though, which I thought strange. I cleaned it out, hoping that might have helped, and put it back, but the poor idling/low revs problem still seems to be there (although the engine management light has yet to come back on). Any more ideas ????

Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem Its a pretty big list of things to check for this fault code and not something you can fumble though. If the idle is suffering just try spraying some WD40 under the inlet manifold and se if the idle changes at all.

| Re: new member with '02 octavia vrs diagnostic problem RESULT !!!!!! Took it back to my local independant VW specialist when the engine management light came back on again on Friday, and he located a split rubber air pipe under the inlet manifold. He fixed it with a short length of smaller diameter tubing inserted inside the old one, and then taped it all up....Hey Presto problem solved !!!!! Total cost £5 !!!!!!!!!
