Sat-nav question for folks in Ireland

Hi folks,

Sorry to use this forum area in this way, but I figured it would be the easiest way to get some relevant replies to my query.

I'm visiting Ireland in August for a friend's wedding. I'm looking to get a sat-nav unit for my Octavia, but coverage of the country seems a bit limited. We're starting in Wicklow I think, then travelling inland a bit.

Can anyone recommend a sat-nav unit that they've used, with decent coverage of the routes in the areas ?

No idea myself, but todonova on here has the vag sat nav unit and he lives here.

I've got Navman sat Nav. It only does about 40% of the country. There is a unit called Nav-tek that does the whole of the country (its reported).

BPM - I guess you're talking about NavTeq, which is one of the suppliers of mapping data. I think Garmin products (StreetPilot, Nuvi, etc.) use them exclusively, as opposed to TomTom which uses data from TeleAtlas.

have a look at www.aanavigator.co.uk which includes the latest / full mapping for the republic from navteq. there is a review on the unit at www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk . as you mentioned tomtom/teleatlas is redundant in southern ireland (i had one for a short time

)
the garmin i3 streetpilot also has decent coverage, but not full- dont think garmin have released it yet.
if you like the aa navigator i may have a voucher code that might work for a discount on the £280 asking price.

Just stumbled across the Garmin Nuvi 350 & 360 models, which sound the dogs danglers. Bit pricey though...

EDIT: weird coincidence, the AA just mailed me with their latest Navigator offer:

Hmm... I thought it was Nav-tek, but sure... Navteq is probably it. They've actually brought out their own PDA style system also.

Ireland - Road coverage is a bit limited, never mind SatNav

Seriously though I have used a streetpilot III around Ireland and always got to my destination, if you get lost anywere you will usually find there is only one road anyway so you can't go far wrong.

A good tip is buy a sump guard

Seriously, I've been over 3 times and am going again next month, and have never got lost yet. Even in the far west (Gaeltach?) where the road signs are only in Gaelic

I bought the Airis GPS T920EF - Europe . It's maps are Q2 2006 Navteq maps so are as recent as you can get, 100% of Ireland as of June 2006. It also comes with maps for the rest of Europe and a simple hack enables it to play avi/divx's.

(Gaeltach?) ... very close, Gaeltacht. I can't remember the Irish for sump guard though

Autoroute has a pretty decent set of maps if you have a laptop, you can pick up a USB GPS receiver for about e80

The maps are about 2 years old at this stage. I won a copy of AutoRoute 2007 with GPS Locator and the M50 still finishes at Sandyford Ind Est.

Hmmm, strange, I have a copy of 2007 too and yes, your correct it doesent have the full m50, but it has my estate which was only started a year ago.... wierd! It does not have the new enfield/kinnegad bypass or the rochfordbridge motorways either
