Worth upgrading to Mk11 vRS?

Hi all,
just looking for some feedback. I currently have a 02 vRS, fantastic car, goes like stink. As I say one member put it, sometimes walking away, I turn around and it still puts a smile on my face when it is clean, which is a rare occurrence on Irish roads. I have it 3 years now and I am starting to get itchy feet thinking it is time to change.

A while back, I drove the Mk11 vRS and to be honest, I was not impressed. I found it slow in comparison to my own, not as edgy as my own if you get me and ride way too hard, I felt every stone on the road which I know some may say is a good thing. So after that I started looking at others, BM's Merc's but my mind keeps coming back to the RS and the fact that there is nothing on the road that can beat it performance wise at that price. Car tax is "cheap", compared to what you would need to pay for the same performance from those mentioned above. I have since seen that you can chip it up to 240bhp which should make a difference.

So my question really is have any of you transitioned from a Mk1 to a Mk11 vRS? Good and bad points? Have any of you chipped a Mk11 and has it transformed the performance of the car?

I didn't own the MK1 vRS but I have a MKII which I am ver happy with. Mentioned above GAFF is a fellow Irish member, he's a good man to ask.

Sorry for not responding sooner (its been a busy 4 days, with 2 weddings a christening and a day racing a RC Buggy

).

Is your Mk1 standard ? If so I'd have to disagree with most of your experience. I feel the car is more responsive and will rev the hold way to the red line quite happily, and when changing gear has a lot less lag than the Mk1. Also theres rumours that the BWA engines were putting out up to 220 BHP standard.

Regarding the ride, I wonder what the tyre pressure setting were at, because over speed ramps theres a night & day difference between the 2. I always found a sharp bang over speed ramps in the Mk1 so you'd have to slow right down to a crawl, the mk2 definitely deals with them better. Also on bumpy roads there's a lot less chance of the Mk2 bottoming out.
I know my pressures were a little high when I got mine but another owner had 45PSI in his. He told me one day that he felt the handling on mk1 was better than mk2, it was no wonder with the tyre pressure set the way they were, when we adjusted the pressures he soon changed his mind

Don't get me wrong I loved my Mk1 but in terms of ride, performance, comfort theres a chance for the better IMHO.

Mine is standard, the major issues I've had with the car are creaks and rattles.
Do a search for Creaks or for Rattles and you'll see the same issues come up e.g. Creaking front suspension, rattle from rear seats & Dash creaks. Then theres some other things like Windscreen de-laminating, issues with Cruise Control, Indicator stalks and some window issues. But saying that nothing big mechanically wise. Fingers crossed.

Are you looking at buying New or Used ? If your interested a friend was speaking a few days ago about maybe selling his.

Hi Gaff,
not need to apologise whatso ever. My MK1 is standard with the exception of an upgraded ICE. The MK2 I drove was one of the first demo cars in the country way back when. Based on your response, me thinks a retest is in order.

Just one or two quick questions. Do you have the same problems as the MK1 with its low front skirt? Also what mpg do you average? I am averaging 34-35mpg at the moment which I think is very good for a car with so much power.

Btw I will probably look at buying new which I know you pay for but there is great pease of mind in knowing the entire history of a car and how it has been driven from day one.

That rumour has now turned out, to be just another rumour but infact, false.
