1.4 16v Help

Hey guys, I want to help a co-worker that have a 2003 VW Polo with 1.4 16 valve engines. The car has automatic transmision.

So you people outhere with Fabias that have this same engine what can be done so this car has a better start up power.

When he is in a stop light an push the throttle pedal to the floor the car take and eternity to develop velocity............He wants to have a better start up.

Is there is a chip o something else for this engine?

THX,

Isaac

The UK spec Fabia 1.4 16v Auto has a 75bhp engine which gives a 0-62mph (0-100kph) time of 17 seconds. There is also a 100bhp version of the same engine fitted to the Fabia with manual transmission, giving a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds. I wonder if the difference in power output is due to a different ECU, or whether there are mechanical differences between the two engines. Perhaps big k can advise.

afaik the two engines are the same but have different strokes (me awaits lots of jokes about that one).

Do you remember that was the exuse for the poor throttle response of the test Skodas! They accused the EU rules saying that was why it was a bit mushy and had people questioning whetehr BMW throttles would be like that inthe future! That one only really affected V-reg cars, and was so silly!

I suppose you could go down the route of induction kit and sports exhaust, etc.

You might be able to get it chipped, but TBH the increase in power would probably be very tiny, and cost £100s!

Well...if the lag is a computer-induced delay between pressing the accelerator and fuel being delivered
to the engine, I'd imagine some ECU-based remap could overcome this. Would cost a lot and would
have small gains in terms of power, but could well improve throttle response.

Unless the lag is induced some other way...

My manual fabia (1.4 16v petrol) has a slight lag between pressing the accelerator and anything happening - very easy to stall it until you get used to it

Would love to reduce that lag, but not if it meant paying for a remap/chip.

Big K - is this 'lag' dealer adjustable in any way?

I've always been quite impressed with the 1000RPM to 5000RPM speed whilst not in gear. By the time my foot hits the floor it's pretty much past 3000RPM. I'll have to time the tickover to redline speed sometime, but I would hazard a guess at less than one second?

Does the 1.4 16V automatic polo have the 75bhp engine too? That may explain the restriction compared to the 100bhp 16V engine, which I assume must be quicker to the redline to gain the extra 25bhp. I'll leave it to bigK to say "Jason, you're wrong, and you're a fool!"

not to my knowledge they are a bit of a pain in the back side you either stall of slip the clutch funny really because the 8v doesn't seem to suffer from this.

Probably!

My original reply was going to be along the lines of "trade it in for an RS"
