1.9 tdi on its 4th turbo in less than a year

not a skoda question but mabie sombody with the same engine has an idea
Father in law has a 2003 leon 1.9 not sure which model

he keeps having problems when going uphill
the engine seems to lose power if he stops and shuts the engine off and starts again it seems be ok
dont think he gets any warning lights

seat have booked him again for a new turbo but that just seems stupid
as he is on his third now all replaced due to the same fault

anybody had anything similar with there skoda ?

Re: 1.9 tdi on its 4th turbo in less than a year

Is he a gentle driver?? Turbochargers can clog up if not exercised properly.

Either that or there is a problem unrelated to the turbo that they are missing.

Thats the first thing that came to mind when multiple turbo failures are mentioned.

It would be extreme if it did it in a few months though.

Re: 1.9 tdi on its 4th turbo in less than a year

As there are no physical bearings in the turbo and its quite high up in the engine it only takes the oil pressure to drop a little and the turbo runs dry.

Re: 1.9 tdi on its 4th turbo in less than a year

My pd 130 has done similar ...going uphill and accelerating then change gear and it went into what I can only assume is limp mode.......switch off and on again and it is fine ...I am going to clean my K&N filter and see if that works ....feels like it just ran out of air

Re: 1.9 tdi on its 4th turbo in less than a year

Ah yes, uses a film of oil as a shaft bearing. Always forget that one. Would certainly account for the rapid failure rate.

Is there any record showing why the previous turbos failed???

Either it's the oil pump, or the dealer's missing something, for sure.
